Watch out Kambah, they're obviously trying to convert you!

The Labor Party has the news of a Diversity ACT Hub opening. That is “a community centre and support service for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTI) community”.

We shall move past the interminable debate on which acronyms they really should be using and instead consider the location of this service:

“These new premises in Kambah will promote and advance the social rights and reduce discrimination against LGBTI persons,” the Chief Minister said.

The facility will provide a service hub, a support network and a community resource that will support the aspirations and full acceptance of LGBTI members of the Canberra community.

We’re more than happy to stand corrected but we weren’t aware of Kambah being a hot spot for this sort of thing?

Close the schools and they probably have to come up with some fangdangled thing to make the economics of closing the schools positive.

In other words, they closed 4 schools and built a superschool, to save money operating 4 schools. Where now they have 4 exschools to do something with that are costing them money to just have sitting there.

(I assume its going where a school was).

It’s actually been open for quite a while now – you’d think the Labor party would have been aware of this seeing as Andrew Barr was at their Twilight Extravaganza back in March, taking part in a handbag throwing competition…

The organisation is located in the old YMCA playgroup cottage next to the adventure playground, and they’ve done a really good job tidying up the building and the grounds. It looks great!

I taken it they are still looking for people who associate as GLBT, surprisingly the aged population of Kambah probably still haven’t learned of the new LGTB fad.

If they want to promote it, why put it in a backwater near a young kids playground. There are lots of buildings inn Tuggeranong that are empty.

Hardly a ‘backwater’ – closer to the city than Tuggeranong centre, just off Drakeford Dr precisely 16 min to the city centre (based on Mr Threepaws’ daily commute).

Was it really necessary to include ‘near a young kids playground’ in your comment? I fail to see the relevance…

Kambah isn’t even really that bad, I don’t understand why there’s this image of the place as the Wild (South-)West.

Yeah, well it hasn’t always been that way. As a fourth grade student in 1976 I shifted from Weston to Kambah, where I was introduced to a new school system known as “open plan”. I’ve never lived in a hippie commune, but I reckon the year and half I spent at that school could get me RPL’d.

Actually Kambah as a location is not so unusual. After all, Kambah (the suburb) was named after Kambah Pool a few years after “The Pool” (as it was known by gays in the 1970s) became a nude beach with the well-known activities taking place in the bushes.

Oh, the rest is VERY multi-coloured!

its jus us middle aged folk, who grew up in an era (the 80s) when Kambah was as far away as you could go and was the cheapest place in the city (indeed, was it one of the first suburbs with large tracts of medium density areas?). Now its practically inner south and the medium density blocks are far bigger than in the far north.

Simple question; how?

So the opening of the ACT Diversity Hub by Chief Minister Gallagher on 26 March 2013 didn’t stick?

Hey they put it online today and the last one passed the notice of the One Eye

While this came up as a new thing on the LAbor site it now appears they’re loading in every government announcement for a very long time.

And here I was thinking that Kambah was a hotbed of urban boganity when it is really Canberra’s rainbow zone.

Well, being the biggest suburb I guess it makes sense that it would also have the most gay people.
