The Herald Sun is carrying AAP copy on moves by UC to ban the sale of water bottles on the campus.

The ban is being phased in, becoming absolute in late March

While I think making a habit of buying bottled water is stupid what else shall we ban on these grounds?

Whatever did we do before they invented these little fancy bottles for people to carry around? How did we drink water constantly all day?

I used to carry water around Sydney years ago. People looked at me like I was mad. I lived in the country and used to bring litres of tank water down with me to avoid drinking Sydney’s hideous water. There were no water bottles (of the current variety), so it was either a juice bottle or a canteen. I’ve never understood how people get by without drinking water all day, to be honest. I’d have the most outrageous headache!

Apropos the water sales thing, I distinctly remember doing a marketing segment in school English. In order to practice writing advertising copy without using a real product, we wrote it for cans of water. The class jeered and carried on that no-one in their right mind would pay money for a product they can get for free. How wrong we were proved!

Oh that’s right, we didn’t. And we all died.

We may not have done it in the past but it doesn’t mean its not a good thing to do.

If you trooly-rooly want the bottle only, buy something that isn’t water, drink it or pour it out and then refill with water.

What like soft drink (99% water) or juice (99% water) or even beer (99.99% water if its Fosters)?

Water bags. Back then we also had horses to attached them to.

Well I like drinking water and while I do often bring water from a re-usable bottle from home it’s not always convenient, so the ability to buy a cold water is one I appreciate.

The enviro angle is pretty ignorant and very short-sighted IMO.

There is nothing sadder than the sight of a well-dressed lady or man, suddenly hoisting one of these bottles to their faces and GLUGGLUGGLUGGLUG SLOSH. Ugh.

… What all these eco nannies don’t seem to understand is that when people buy bottled water that aren’t buying water, they are buying bottles. Its all well an good to say that water comes out of a tap but its not much good to you if you haven’t got something to carry it around and drink from.

If that was the case then why are they sold in shrink-wrapped clusters? If you trooly-rooly want the bottle only, buy something that isn’t water, drink it or pour it out and then refill with water.

are they going to start selling empty water bottles then, and have numerous points to fill them up with cold water?

Cause buying the same water in the same bottle but with added colours, flavours, bubbles and heaps of sugar is perfectly OK.

Clearly uni students have a lot more money than I did when I was an undergrad. Paying for water?!?!

Lecturers listing their own commercial publications as required reading.

degrees… oh hang on, the UC never really had them did they?

Disposable razors would be a good start – you know, the ones where you throw away the whole thing including the non-reusable handle.
