UPDATED: Students at Queanbeyan East Public School were given an early mark today, 22 June, when a truck accident caused a burst water main that left the facility without water.

Water supply to parts of Queanbeyan East was disrupted from 10:45 am but Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council staff acted promptly to repair the water main break on Thurralilly Street and Bungendore Road by 12:45 pm.

At that point, parents of the 250-odd students at Queanbeyan East Public School had already been informed to pick up their children.

The initial message, “QEPS is now non-operational, we are asking parents to collect children as a matter of urgency. Please come to the office to sign your child out”, caused ripples of concern on social media but it was soon clarified.

An Education Department spokesperson said supervision and bottled water was provided to the children while they waited for their parents or carers to collect them from the school grounds.

All children and staff were off the school grounds by 2:00 pm.
