Territory And Municipal Services have announced that a water ski training trial for Lake Ginninderra starting in April:

The trial involves providing a specific location where members of the ACT Water Ski Association can undertake tournament training on a slalom course and over jumps. The trial is not considering opening Lake Ginninderra to social water skiing.

The Molonglo Reach water ski area has been closed for safety reasons since December 2010 and the ACT Government recognises the need to provide a training venue for local water ski and wakeboard competitors. Works are taking place to re-open the Molonglo Reach site but due to the ongoing movement of debris and sand bars, and the reduced water level in Lake Burley Griffin, Molonglo Reach is not expected to open for full use in the near future.

The ACT Government has worked with the ACT Water Ski Association to develop reasonable conditions that consider noise, environment and amenity. The boats which will be used for the trial on Lake Ginninderra make approximately the same level of noise as a family sedan. There will be strict conditions placed on the trial, including a restricted period of time that a boat can be used. The proposed times are 7 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 6 pm. Only one boat with one skier or wake boarder will be permitted to operate at any one time and all boats will need to be approved by the ACT Water Police.

The trial will also have strict environmental monitoring, including by local independent bird experts as well as noise monitoring at various locations, including near Kangara Waters retirement village.

It’s hardly a Bogan free for all. 2×2 hr sessions per day, 1 boat at a time that must be approved for this use, only open to members of Act waterski association doing training for tournament events.

Thin end of the wedge.

They will gradually ramp it up to more boats, faster boats, more hours.

If it was economically or culturally valuable, that would be OK, but bogans burning around Nature making blue smoke is nothing new or worthwhile.

Snapperjack on the long run you will be better and cheaper off with solar power. When the times comes that your views may become a bit more enlightened you may perhaps be able to give due credit to the community movement against that polluting gas-fired power station. Canberra can count itself lucky with people like Mick Gentleman, Simon Corbell and Shane Rattenbury who have and are steering us to affordable renewable power.

I’m not sure why the association has even bothered with it when Good Hope ski area on Burrinjuck isn’t that far away. Mind you, it probably wouldn’t hurt to chuck a couple boats on Burley Griffin every morning to stir up the algae and send it downstream a bit.

Excellent – giving bogans a licence to make undue noise – very sensible.

Incidentally, from the look of Johnboy’s photo, Gungahlians are a fashionable and stylish lot, aren’t they?

Last time I looked Henry, Lake Ginninderra was in Belco.

Spot on. Noisy vehicles are fine, apparently. And I remember while in Pialligo years ago, being almost deafened by some of those water skiing boats, it was ridiculous. Vehicle (and boat) noise isn’t policed at all.

I’m all for this. Time for our lakes to be more than ornamental duck ponds. Can we also have a few more tee pees and house boats? I think some Vegas style coordinated water squirters would go down a treat.

Pretty comprehensive Q&A at the Belconnen Community Council meeting a few weeks back. See this url: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Belconnen-Community-Council/137455593006525

Well maybe if the family sedan is a 350 Chev under load….

I give this three weeks max.

Great to see this going ahead, but I fail to see the need for such stringent rules — the Lake is nowhere near Aranda.
