Where to get a waterbed

Hi Rioters,

My husband andI are considering buying a water bed. We had one years ago when we lived in Brisbane, and as I remember it, it was one of the comfiest beds I had ever slept on ( though it could be that time and distance are playing tricks on my memory).

I was wondering if anyone here has a waterbed and knows of a good place to get one. Also with these things is important to know that there are waterbed service people in town in the advent of punctures/leaks etc.

I have looked online but the Canberra based company’s who come up when you do a search don’t have functioning websites for me to check.

Any info, advice would be appreciated.

Loved my old waterbed. Best thing in hot climates as the water drew body heat away – was always cool when we needed it to be.

Yep only the odd cat claw caused any grief. And never any back issues.

Only got rid of it because the style was horribly 80s. After some years of grief with an inner spring mattress, we sprung the big dollars last year for a full-on latex mattress. Very nice.
But note they are never as body hugging as they feel in the store once you add mattress protector and sheets over the top.

Water beds are great. I wouldn’t give mine up ever.

All 4 happened to us with our 90’s waterbed experience with addition of the aching back. Waterbeds offer absolutely no chiropractic support.

Darling, is that you!!? Wow, I haven’t heard from you in years! Fancy meeting you again on an internet chat board! Yeah, that bed we had truly sucked didn’t it, and remember that time we seriously popped it, ahhhh, good times.

The only time in my life I’ve ever had recurring back pain was when I had a waterbed. Sold it and the sore back went away. Go figure.

Post hoc ergo proctor hoc.

When I had my water bed I only got a sore back when I had to sleep on a conventional mattress.

I find a futon style mattress the most comfortable. It’s firm and give support. Softer mattresses give backache. Plus they don’t add to the power bill.

Yo, 1970’s called and they want their fad back!

Don’t bother… things generally disappear from the marketplace when they are crap and people stop purchasing them. In the case of waterbeds this started happening in the early 80’s and wound up by the 90s.

If you end up finding a waterbed, one/or a combination of four main things will happen…

1) The heater will break and you’ll wake up shivering cold.
2) You’ll spring a slow leak and not know it till days later
3) You’ll spring a fast leak which will cause all kinds of inconvenience if ya know what I’m sayin’ 😉
4) Mould will grow between the bladder and the base

If none of those things happen, you can bet yourself that at some point you and/or your husband will end up with an aching back.

Well I must have led a charmed life. I had an el cheapo water bed for about 25 years and had no major problems. The occasional tiny leak probably caused by a cat claw. Easy to fix with patch and glue.

Decided to get rid of it to save electricity and basically modernise. They are certainly comfortable and the pets loved it in winter!

Making Mattresses in Fyshwick actually started life in the late 1970s as Water Brothers Waterbeds. When the waterbed fad began to fizzle out they started selling mattresses and changed the name of the business.

Hi,

Dream Design Furniture (Fyshwick) used to sell them (not sure about now), as well as Australian Bedding Company ( Mitchell)- just google them. Update: best call, their website, indeed, is not functioning.

With Dream design’s, our bed never had any probs, only the heater “packed up” after several years of service, sold the base and mattress to someone who had a puncture in theirs, yet working heater.
I remember we’d discussed this- they could not find anyone to repair it, we couldn’t find water-bed heater.

Good luck!
