Watson Caltex Gone?

By Northwest9 16 April 2010 16

My work colleague who lives out past gundaroo has just told me that the watson caltex was barricaded up yesterday, with people taking away the pumps.

this morning apparently all the pumps are gone, the shops closed up and empty, and the entrances are barricaded up?

anyone know anything about this? considering the shell at epic closed as well?

What’s Your opinion?

I travel a little way out of my way to buy ALL my petrol from the Lyneham servo. Half the pumps are shot – and the owner is apparently not being served well by the petrol company, they would like nothing better than to shaft him, and he waits aeons to get the pumps fixed. I hope any Rioters who aren’t aware that the Lyneham servo is still there, e.g. some Belconnenites, might do a small detour and fill up there. Prices compare pretty much with Woollies Dickson.

GA: yes I did say rebuilding.
VG: I end up there on weekends, when the others go skyhigh, and have generally found Amaroo holds their prices stable.
NZ: yes – eagle, hawk – knew it was something like that, just couldn’t be bothered looking it up during a busy period. Figured people would know what I meant anyway… 🙂

The Shell Service Station at EPIC on Northbourne Avenue is going to be demolished and a new complex re-built. It won’t be a simple re-branding excercise to make it a Woolworths/Caltex.

Yeah it’s been bought out by BP and a notice up on the bowsers last week said it would only be close a few days for “rebranding”.

Plus the Shell closed indefinitely for rebuilding as a Woolies/Caltex. The one in Mitchell continues to be priced way above anywhere else and just doesn’t seem to care. And there’s the usual congestion around the Shell/Caltex duo in Gungahlin.

It’s all getting kind of incestuous isn’t it?

Buying petrol our way is getting hard. I recommend spinning out to the much better priced (even without voucher discounts) Uniteds at Amaroo and Hawks Nest.

Sorry but that’s rubbish. I used United at Amaroo for a while but it is consistently more expensive than the Woolies/Shell combo in Gungahlin

Dickson had one too. Great driveway service. Think Page or Latham had one too.

Wasnt there one in the ‘burbs in MacGregor too? And farrer? Maybe BP is just coming back with the popularity of the ol days.

Cook had a BP – very good servo too. But with one at Jamison its closure was inevitable.

@Hells – Yeah I was just referring currently operational sites, but thanks for the history lesson. 🙂

BP is hidden away in Waramanga as well.

Hells_Bells74 11:11 pm 16 Apr 10

Unless you meant only ones still operating. Sorry if that was your meaning.

Not sure that the United (Amaroo) is any cheaper than the Woolies or Coles, taking into account the 4c per litre supermarket voucher. I don’t think that Woolies sells E10, Coles/Shell do as does United, that is generally a couple of cents a litre cheaper than normal ULP.

Gungahlin Al, I think you will find it is called Eagle Hawk Hill, rather than Hawks Nest (that’s a long way from here). Actually, that whole area, immediately over the border on the Federal Highway, is officially called Sutton. Eagle Hawk Hill is the name of the hill behind the Rydges Resort – I think it makes up part of the state border, but I might be wrong.

And yes, I have heard that the United in Amaroo, at least, is often cheaper than the servos in Gungahlin…certainly cheaper than the ones in Nicholls and Mitchell.

Cheers.

Interesting to see that BP is getting more of a presence in Canberra. The Mobil servo on Ipswich St in Fyshwick has recently re-branded as BP too. For years Canberra has only had a handful BP outlets (that I’m aware of) – Phillip, Chisolm, Jamison, Kingston and Braddon. Now they seem to be popping up everywhere.

Haha, these new Gungahlin blow-ins (just kidding)! Back in my day we had to go Belconnen for supermarket. Petrol stations? Oh, we used to dream of petrol stations…

It’s not a permanent closure – filled up there on the way out of town last weekend, and there was a sign next to the pump saying they were going to be closing down for a couple of days before reopening on the 19th (from memory) as a BP.
