We have a wild dog plan

Territory And Municipal Services bring the pleasing news that they’re hard at work tackling the wild dog issues in Canberra’s rural hinterland.

The Department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) has joined with local NSW farmers and the South East Livestock Health and Pest Authority to manage wild dogs and foxes in the areas to the south and east of the ACT, Stephen Hughes, Manager of National Parks, Reserves and Rural Land announced today.

“The Shannon’s Flat, Bredbo and Michelago Cooperative Wild Dog and Fox Management Plan outlines how TAMS will work together with NSW stakeholders to minimise the impact of wild dogs and foxes on agriculture,” said Mr Hughes.

“The plan will maintain a dog-free buffer area at sites within close proximity to adjacent grazing land by working closely with stakeholders.

“The plan promotes integrated management of wild dogs and foxes across all land tenures by poisoned baiting and trapping. The plan will commit all parties to the management of these areas over the next five years.

“To fulfil the ACT’s commitment to these plans, the ACT Government employs a fulltime dog-trapper and engages the services of a contract dog-trapper to cover peak dog activity periods in Spring Autumn. ACT rangers will lay poisoned baits for dogs and foxes along 23 separate baiting trails within wild dog control areas of the Namadgi National Park and adjoining Nature Reserves.”

Certainly aware of a fox problem, but I’ve never seen or heard wild dogs in Namadgi or neighbouring state forests. Certainly doesn’t mean they’re not there – but I’ve spent a bit of time in the area.

Of concern are the number of hunting dogs seemingly “left behind” by their owners – I’ve come accross two in the last twelve months at Tallaganda.

For a feral/wild dog, that one sure drew the short straw for camouflage.
