Where’s the best place to get your wedding cake in Canberra? Photo: File.

There’s a lot that goes into planning a wedding – between catering, location, invites and more, organising your wedding is one of the greatest tasks many of us will take on in our lives. And, in the middle of it all is the wedding cake! The centrepiece of any reception, your wedding cake is one of the most important ways in which you and your spouse can really elevate your celebration.

However, as with any aspect of wedding planning, deciding on a wedding cake can feel like a daunting task. What flavour will work for your party? What design should be chosen? How big should it be? All of these questions can be easily answered by a professional wedding cake baker, who can help you formulate exactly what kind of cake you want, and then make that dream a reality.

But in a city like Canberra with so many talented bakers available, how do you know who to choose? We’re here to help. In this article, we’ll give you a few traits to hunt for in a great wedding cake baker, as well as a guide to some of Canberra’s top businesses.

What makes a great wedding cake?

Deciding on who to hire to bake a wedding cake is one of the most important decisions to make while planning a wedding. Here are some important things to look for in a great baker:

  • Customisable design. There’s no rule that says wedding cakes have to look a certain way. Maybe the traditional look isn’t desired. Perhaps something with colour is prefered. A great wedding cake baker will consider personal tastes when designing the cake to make sure it fits with a wedding’s overall style.
  • Affordable. Weddings can become an expensive affair as the costs begin to stack up – but not everything has to cost a fortune. Look out for competitively priced bakers who don’t sacrifice quality for cost.
  • Reliable. Successful wedding planning often comes down to well-managed timing, and wedding cakes (unsurprisingly) can take quite a while to bake. The best wedding cakes are made my timely bakers who can work to a schedule. To make sure the baker is able to deliver the cake on time, its best to read through previous client experiences.
  • High quality, fresh ingredients. It’d be a shame to have waited weeks for a cake and spent quite a bit of money, only for it to arrive and not be delicious. Only bakers that are using the best ingredients are baking the tastiest cakes. In addition, a great wedding cake baker will give tastings to clients as they choose.
  • Excellent communication. From the design stage to time management to delivery, communication is important. The best wedding cakes are made by bakers who can talk openly and be reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to make a wedding cake?

The bigger the cake, the longer it takes! From the hours spent preparing and baking each layer, plus the amount of time it takes to properly decorate the cake, it can take up to three days for a wedding cake to be completed.

Can I have a wedding cake delivered long-distance?

Absolutely. A fully baked and decorated cake can feasibly sit at room temperature for up to three days. You may incur additional costs from the baker to have it delivered long-distance, and not all bakers may do so. It's best to check with your desired bakery before you book.

How early should my wedding cake be delivered?

Leading up to the big day, the wedding cake will be stored in a fridge to keep it fresh for the wedding day. Ideally it would be delivered about half-an-hour before the reception, so that it’s not cold when it is served, but still fresh.

Are wedding cakes expensive?

They can be, yes. Remember, what you’re paying for is not just any old cake – you’re paying for the time spent designing the cake, sourcing and purchasing its ingredients, and the time it takes to bake and decorate it properly. All of these costs can quickly add up, but if you’ve found a great baker then it will all be worth it in the end.

How big should my wedding cake be?

This depends on how big your wedding is, and how many people you expect to eat the cake. In general, three tiers will serve 50-100 guests, so if you’re having more guests than that you’ll likely need four or more layers.

COYD are the best ive dealt with.

If i had a business, id hardly promote any competitors either..

I think it is okay to “promote” or I would say suggest the competition if you are completely unable to help someone. It’s called customer service. At least then u4333439 could say to their friends “Well, XYZ couldn’t help me but gosh they were helpful in providing some suggestions. Maybe you should try them for your thing!”

But then, I value customer service and being a nice human being highly, as a service provider and as a consumer. Maybe I’m odd.

A very late addition, but I just wanted to report some poor customer service at cakesofyourdreams. I just tried to make an enquiry for a wedding to be held later this year. Unfortunately Cakesofyourdreams was booked out and unable to assist 🙁 When I asked them though if they could suggest some other places I could try, they quickly [though politely] informed me that they did not know any other reputable stores in Canberra and that I should call around. When I asked them who I could call, they said they couldn’t help.

Not a big fail no, but these little things do upset me, especially as they are so highly regarded. What established store of any kind does not have any idea of the competition! Ha!

Thankfully riotact is here to provide such advice.

This is for Nicensweet,

I have been trying to message you in responce to your offer in this thread, but i don’t seem to be able to message anyone privately. When i select your nickname, i get a message saying i’m not authorized to view your profile. I am interested in your offer and am getting married 19 Oct 2012.

Please email me at angelamundy@iprimus.com.au

Thanks

Hi I have just got a beautiful cake my wedding from silverfrostings ,
very resonable priced and no differerence if it is a birthday cake or wedding cake.
very friendly helpful people to deal with.

Hate to state the obvious.. Costco.

They have a huge range of big cakes and they are very cheap. Big Slabs, Mud Cakes, Tiramisu, Black Forest

Hi clairehunt,

I have just started my cake decorating business from home (after having done many cakes for family and friends) and am offering my cakes at cost price for the first 10 bookings, I have 6 booked in already 4 of which are weddings so if your still looking for a lovely cake for your wedding next year I’d be happy to work within your budget!

We had a very simple slab (one layer) wedding-cake from the Continental in Queanbeyan. It was $160 for the cake (Italian Torte) which was supposed to feed up to 80 people and an extra $30 for native flower decoration. We had about 53 at the wedding and had very generous portions as it also served as our dessert.

We didn’t want the ‘wedding look’ and preferred that people eat the cake rather than take it home to be forgotton. As non-cake eaters we were really pleased with the cake – would thoroughly recommend the Continental.

A friend recently started making special occasion cakes as a business… you could try getting in touch with her… prices from $130, but I don’t think that will get you the cake you are after…

My wife and I had a simple three-tier cake, Large caramel mud, medium chocolate mud, and the small top layer, a traditional fruit cake. We had quotes from just $200 to just over $500; but that was 10 years ago.

One lady told us about a “repair” she’d done for an $800 cake from Sydney, which didn’t make the trip to Canberra intact. When she pulled the marzipan back, the cake was just several $3 Woolworths Fruit Cakes! These are not the cakes you are looking for…

I can recommend Little Miss Cupcakes from my dealings with her thus-far. Very well priced (for wedding cakes) and she makes sample boxes of cake for you to taste-test.

try Louise Martin cakes, she is brilliant. Her work won the wedding cake first prize at the Canberra Show 2011

Give Jane at Sweet Dreams Cakes a call on 0412 285 545. She works from home and while I’ve never had her wedding cakes, her cupcakes and birthday cakes are amazing. She’s fantastic at the creative stuff too.

Cakes of your dreams in Queanbeyan is fantastic – http://www.cakesofyourdreams.com.au/cakes-weddings.php

They have such a fantastic range of cakes, and if you order some samples on Thursdays, you can pick them up to try on Saturday ($2 per sample) – they taste brilliant.

As much as I agree with you and recommend Cakes Of Your Dreams wholeheartedly, I am not sure there is much on offer in the sub $200 price range to feed 80?.

the secret is not to use the ‘w’ word. If you say the ‘w’ word it will almost certainly cost you more than $200. We sneakily did most of our wedding without mentioning it was for a wedding and we saved heaps and our wedding was an enormous success. A couple of things including our cake we had to mention wedding and they ended up being the most disproportionally priced and most disappointing. It’s an awful feeling when you realised you are being scammed because you are getting married.

McDonalds offers ice cream cakes for reasonable prices.

+1 for Annie’s Cake Place. Did our wedding cake in Feb 2007. It looked great and tasted fantastic. Was more than $200, but it was fancy.

Short Cut Creations http://www.shortcutcreations.com/

This is the business of a friend of mine. She’s only recently started doing cakes professionally, but has been doing cakes for ages and ages. Her stuff is beautiful, and tastes delish. No idea about prices! She works from home. Give her a ring!

+1 for Sugar and Slice Cakes, she did our wedding cake and it looked and tasted incredible. Very well priced too.

Can really recommend Flute in Fyshwick (8 Barrier St 8am-3pm M-F). We went around to a bunch of places and asked for a cake and got one price, and a wedding cake and got a price that doubled the normal price (apparently due to the extra care taken with a wedding cake!!). Flute didn’t do this and was a pleasure to deal with, if only so you have an excuse to taste their creations!

I’ve also heard good things about Sugar and Slice Cakes.

Congratulations and good luck with finding reasonably priced wedding-related goods and services!

Annies Cake Place
Shop 8, Crawford Cntr 166-168 Crawford St, Queanbeyan NSW 2620

They did our wedding and naming day cakes (enough pieces for 70-80 odd people), very reasonable prices, you can select from simple to way over the top designs, fruit, mud or other cake inside. Very highly recommmend and very pleased with their help and advice.
