This weekend (13 & 14 February) the tiny village of Wee Jasper opens its doors to you! As the community tries to attract visitors to the area and to entice some tree-changers, a number of activities are on to show just what this hidden hamlet has to offer.
It’s also the summer edition of Wee Jasper Naturally’s – a great opportunity to pop out to Wee Jasper for a day or even the whole weekend. Refreshments will be available at the Hall in the Community Association Tea Rooms and of course at The Stables Tavern.
Wee Jasper Public School will be open all weekend for you to meet our Principal, Mark Sullivan and see what life is like in a small country school. At the recent Community Association meeting Mr Sullivan presented information on the future of the school and the community is now working hard to attract families to the valley and to increase enrolments in the school.
The “Wee Jasper Inspired” Art Show which will be on in the Hall. Entries have been received from some of our own talented folk plus from artists and craftspeople from Yass, A.C.T. and also Sydney including Amanda McLean, Margaret Carr, Christine Anderson, Nick Hewlett, Joy Cavenagh and Cathy Pearsall. Popular Wee Jasper local, Kim Nelson will also be exhibiting some of his extraordinary works.
The exhibition, which is a fundraiser for the Wee Jasper Reserves Trust, is open from 9-6 each day in the Memorial Hall and the Community Association Tea Rooms will be open for refreshments. All works in OPEN classes are for sale, cheque or cash only.
Jennifer Barton will be showing her wonderful collection of over 300 images of Wee Jasper’s history from settlement to 1960 in the Hall also. A great opportunity to see what life was like in our community in the past. Many locals families are still in residence in Wee Jasper and the Yass valley after all these years and are featured in the display including the Davis and Barber families, the Careys and Mitchells, Webbs, Blundells and Graces.

Carey’s Cave is also having a special session on Sunday morning for artists and acoustic musicians to utilise this unique space, phone the Cave for details.
The Bentwing Bats are back and you can join National Parks for an up close and personal experience on Saturday evening as they leave their cave for feeding. Over 20,000 bats leave the cave each night and it’s a terrific experience. Phone Ian and Helen Cathles to book, spaces limited phone 62279634.
There are still vacancies on the Caving with Canberra Speleological Society. This is a great chance for anyone who has never been caving or who has been once or twice to get underground with real experts. For only $30 you get use of all gear, expert guides, club membership and invitations to future caving trips. Sessions are 1pm Saturday and 11am Sunday. There are still some spots left.
