Weekend bridge demolition

Like a red rag to a bull the ABC informs us that Roads ACT is discouraging the public from trying to watch the demolition of a bridge at the Glenloch Interchange on Saturday:

Two bridges were made redundant when the Glenloch Interchange was upgraded as part of the Gungahlin Drive Extension.

One of the bridges was destroyed two years ago and the second will be demolished on Saturday.

Roads ACT director Tony Gill says a one kilometre exclusion zone will be set up, and the Black Mountain Nature Reserve will be closed to the public, as well as parts of Weston Park.

Mr Gill is urging people to stay well away from the area.

Well you heard what the man said…

What time on Saturday Mr Gill? 6:30am?

Why does that matter, unless youve got a time machine?

Does anyone have any information on exactly what they are doing at the glenlock interchange?

Is there a plan or something on the net? I just cant figure out what all this new work is for

50% chance Katy will CM by Monday?

Stanhope sleeps more comfortably at night with less bridges hanging around.

All jokes aside, there probably is no strict requirement to tear it down now but there will come a day where it will become unsound without maintenance. Best to get to work on it now while the roadworks are set up and there are heaps of $40ph cash-in-hand contractors around.

I was quite fond of our very own Bridge To Nowhere as well.

Perhaps it has to be removed as it may otherwise be a breeding ground for feral bridge trolls.

My understanding that the bridge didn’t need to be demolished at the time, no need to spend money on something that is structurally sound to simply remove it. I guess the change to remove the bridge has somethign to do with the new interchange configuration or is it that they have now found money to demolish it? My opinion is they should invest the cost of demolition into instead removing red arrows at traffic lights… lol.

I know they’re duplicating the North/South carriageway as part of the GDE upgrades, not sure about anything else though.

As for demolition of the old bridge, is there any particular reason that it had to be removed? I know that when they built a new bridge in oaks estate, they just closed off the old one and left it there, that happened probably 5-7 years ago.

WIN News agrees with you Aronde. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYaw1Ol8jn4

Simon Corbell even described that demolition as safe because they didn’t publicise it, and held it on a weekday. A very interesting change in policy.

I seem to recall when they demolished the last bridge they did not announce it as such to prevent people heading down to have a look. Why the change this time?

Awwww, you mean they’re ending my days of driving under the mystery-bridge-to-nowhere and wondering why they didn’t demolish it the first time around?

What time should we all rendezvous?

a 1km exclusion zone? are they getting the same team who demolished the hospice?
