Weekend Cafe Hot Spot: Cream Cafe & Bar, Canberra City

I have found myself spending a lot of time in the city trying to find food this week. It would seem that being a Fashfest model causes quite the appetite – who would have thought!

I stumbled across an old favourite, Cream Café & Bar. I used to go to Cream for dinner all the time but haven’t been there in years.

As I walked in I was told by a waitress to sit anywhere I liked, as long as it was on the right hand side of the restaurant. I found a table, took my coat off and sat down.

I looked over the menu and immediately picked out two options; the corn fritters with avocado smash, soft poached egg, fetta and pea tendril salad, with lemon infused olive oil ($18), or the rosti of Dutch cream potato hash with whipped fetta, smoked salmon, crispy capers and chive dressing ($19). Both sounded delicious but I decided to go with the corn fritters, as I wasn’t in the mood for salmon.

The café was busy as there were a lot of businesspeople getting their morning coffee. It’s not the place to go for a quiet breakfast but definitely the one if you like to people watch.

The service was unfortunately slow, especially getting coffee. On that particular morning it was fine because I wasn’t in a rush, but if it was a normal day for me, I wouldn’t have had time to wait.

In the end, the meal was actually really good so the waiting didn’t really bother me. The egg was poached to perfection, as soon as I broke it open with my fork the yolk oozed out all over the fritters. It was a very filling meal, so I probably shouldn’t have ordered the side of crispy bacon as I really didn’t need it!

I would definitely recommend Cream as a weekend café hot spot. Hopefully it’s a little less busy on weekends without the businesspeople. The café is in a great spot – the perfect location for people watching, and they serve simple tasty food. It’s everything you could want in a café.
