Weekend Cafe Hot Spot: Cupping Room, Canberra City

One of the things I dislike the most about favourite cafes of mine is when they change their menu. I almost have a mini panic attack because it’s no longer familiar to me. So recently when I heard that Cupping Room changed their menu, I was genuinely concerned that it was no longer going to be my fave. How could they possibly out-do their last menu?!

I decided to use a catch up with a friend, Mitch, as an opportunity to suss it out.

As we were reading over the menus we both looked up at each other and smiled. I asked Mitch if we could order one of everything – it looked so good, neither of us could decide.

Mitch ended up ordering the heuvos bollo (roughly translated to egg bun), which is a burger with two eggs, two rashers of bacon, avocado and sauce for $15. I got the smashed avo dish, which was sour dough toast with two poached eggs, smashed avo, pomegranate, micro herbs and a lemon cheek ($18). We also decided to share the deep fried banana fritters with micro herbs and fresh figs, drizzled with salted caramel sauce and a sprinkling of icing sugar. These were a special and aren’t on the menu anymore though!

The dishes came out fast and before we knew it we had both overeaten and were experiencing food comas. But oh my, was the food amazing! Cupping Room has actually managed to out-do itself again.

Mitch’s burger was divine, served on a sesame brioche bun. The perfect man meal.

My eggs on toast were not just regular eggs on toast; The eggs were poached to perfection, the avo mash was fresh and the pomegranate seeds burst in my mouth literally creating a flavour explosion.

Now, the dish I had been dying to eat – the banana fritters! It was so delicious that I ended up wrapping a piece in a serviette to take home for Mike. I was hoping to not get seen by the waitress but she knew right away why I had asked for the extra napkin. Oh well!

I saw a number of other new dishes on the menu that also looked absolutely divine, including a chicken and kale salad served with fresh grapes. I am definitely going to have to make a couple more visits to Cupping Room.

Cupping Room has changed my view on a menu change. The next time it happens I will be super excited! Good work guys – keep it up!

Cupping room is located at 1/1-13 University Avenue, Canberra City (opposite the cop shop).

$15 for an egg and bacon roll. Yikes! I’m sure it tasted great, and I love the Cupping Room, but I can’t get my head around that, haha.

But it’s on a piece of wood

This place always sounds awesome .. I must get there one day! I wouldn’t mind trying that avocado smash! Their Heuvos Bollo looks even better than last year’s!

“Sounds” is the operative word.
Recommended that you take ear plugs if you want to enjoy the food. It’s the noisiest place in Canberra.

Good Brother in Dickson would give them a run for their money. Clashing plates at pain level – throughout the cafe. They really need to do something about it – I won’t be back, despite the EXCELLENT coffee there!

Dessert and the poached eggs look good, i think the egg and bacon roll would look better and more appealing if it was deconstructed and presented in a modern manner. At the moment it just looks like a basic egg and bacon roll plunked on a piece of wood.

I’m just happy that there’s a dish on a trendy cafe menu that hasn’t yet been deconstructed or stuffed in a jar. I like my meals fully constructed!

Those banana fritters look incredible! Attention Cupping Room’s owner: If you bring this dish back as a special (and can somehow also find figs to garnish in Canberra’s miserable winter), I AM VERY INTERESTED.
