Weekend cafe hot spot: Double Shot, Deakin

Last weekend I had heard that Locale, a new pizza place, was opening at the Deakin shops.

We thought it would be a great lunch option, only to discover upon arrival that Locale is only open for dinner. I knew I should have checked out the Facebook page before making the trip in, but will definitely be heading back to check it out for dinner as soon as possible.

Starving, I remembered that Double Shot is also at the Deakin shops. It’s an old favourite and a regular hang out for many of my friends. It was busier than what I expected for a Saturday afternoon, but we were able to find a seat without to much difficulty.

I narrowed my options down to a big bowl of spaghetti, or the pulled lamb souva and decided to ask the waitress for her opinion. She was quick to recommend the souva (slow cooked lamb shoulder with Shepards salad, spiced tahini + tzatziki in a grilled pitta with lemon salted fries, $19).

Mike ordered the eggs benedict (free range eggs, choice of bacon, salmon, baby spinach or gypsy ham, topped with Hollandaise sauce, $18).

It could have been the hangover, but I’m pretty sure the coffee was delicious!

Our meals came out quite fast and I consumed the entire thing, not even stopping to take a breath. Greek food is just the best! Who ever thought of wrapping chips up in a sandwich is a genius!

Mike’s eggs benny was a little smaller than he would have liked but at the end of the meal he actually admitted it was the perfect size. He ended up really liking it and said that it actually tasted healthy … maybe Double Shot make a healthier version of benedict sauce? Is that even possible?

I really really enjoyed Double Shot; the menu has so much variety, with something for everyone. It really is the perfect weekend meeting place!

Double Shot is located at the Deakin shops, 7/18 Duff Place Deakin and is open 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and 7:30am to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday.

Wow, a piece of toast, topped with a couple of eggs and bacon…$18!!!
Are prices like that common for such simple breakfast fare? Seems very overpriced to me.

I agree with Evilomlap about the “freakin chopping board”.

I find the staff to be the worst bit – I’ve been a few times, and only once have the staff been pleasant. The rest of the time they are disinterested at best.

That said, their breakfast menu is great and their peanut butter smoothies are to die for (made with almond milk, so good for the lactose-free among us, but they taste like they’re made with regular milk).

And how exactly does something “taste healthy”?

I’m sure you’ll instinctively know an unhealthy taste if you taste one. So not one of those.

That’s been my experience.

I’ve been there 3 times in the past 12 months and every time the staff behaved like I was unwelcome. I was even grunted at when given a menu on arrival. I ordered the tomato soup from the specials menu on one occasion and it looked and tasted like a tin of tomatoes, with some salt water and limp onion slices added, and served luke warm. And they had the audacity to charge $20 for it. I haven’t gone back since.

Their coffee is nice but it doesn’t make up for the service or the price.

I’ve decided the next place that serves me anything on a freakin chopping board, I’m stealing the board. This hipster trend has got to stop!
