This year I was organized and had a list of things I wanted to buy at the Boxing Day sales but I thought I would be clever about it and head into Westfield Belconnen early to avoid the crowds.

Coffee is a must before shopping and crowds, and I happened to stumble across a specialty coffee house called Espresso Room.

The first thing that caught my eye was the glass cabinet filled with fresh pastries, giant cookies and croissants, which I was told are made especially for Espresso Room.

As I waited for my latte I got chatting with the barista about life, and then how he got into the coffee business. I was surprised to learn that Espresso Room is not just another coffee shop, that the company is trying to build sustainable specialty coffee shops and working environments. Staff are taught everything there is to know about coffee, right down to which farm it comes from.

Espresso Room source their coffee from Ona (pronounced like honor) because they share the same passion for coffee. Together they participate in and run the Jammin’ da House fundraising event which goes towards Project Origin; Ona’s green-been trading organisation.

It’s so nice to see a specialized coffee shop that prides themselves on quality, as well as investing in their staff; they want people to love working at Espresso Room and grow with the business.

My coffee had come out in this time with a perfectly poured swan; demonstrating the point of quality. It was a great coffee, and I honestly do think that the two things that make a great coffee are the beans and the barista who makes it. There is definitely a skill to making coffee!

Espresso Room have three locations; Westfield Belconnen, Westfield Woden and Hyperdome Tuggeranong. According to the website it looks like one will also open in Civic next year.

Haven’t tried the Belco one but their other stores are brilliant (the story doesn’t mention their two sister stores in Civic.)

Fans of Urban Bean in Woden won’t be surprised, same owner so there’s the experience to back up these stores.

I have been there twice. The second time, the barista ( I think the dude in the photo ), remembered what I had ordered 3 weeks before!
I was impressed.
Oh, the coffee is good too.
