This weekend I stumbled across Lava Carts in Westfield Belconnen, located in the fresh food area on the ground floor. What caught my eye were the beautiful looking cupcakes in the display cabinet – where were these last week for our Best of Canberra Cupcakes taste off?!

I introduced myself to founder and director Simon, who started Lava Carts in 2014 as a single mobile coffee van at the Mackay Hospital. He was the only coffee vendor on site and his business quickly grew into franchises across the country. I’m a really big fan of the little guy winning; I find stories like Simon’s so inspiring.

I was in a hurry to run my morning errands so Lava Carts ended up being perfect as an express on-the-go kind option. I ordered a latte and a ham, cheese and tomato toastie and made my way to the huge 16-seater table.

My toastie and coffee came out together, and they both smelled wonderful. I took a sip of my coffee and was so pleased. Too often when I order coffee it’s served at a lukewarm temperature, I personally enjoy my coffee hot. I didn’t even ask Simon for a hot coffee but he delivered and it was great! His barista certainly makes a great cup of coffee.

The toasties are delicious by the way, with a good pinch of pepper and salt. So yummy! But be careful, they’re hot!!

Simon really wants people to be able to get something quick and easy that is homey, which is why the Lava Carts cupcakes are sourced locally from a home business. It’s also all very good value with toasties from $3 and Pastizzi’s for $1 with any coffee purchase – I’ll just buy them all thanks!

So if you’re in Belconnen Westfield, I highly recommend you check out Lava Carts.

My friend and I had coffee and cake a couple of weeks ago at Lava Carts, after I read this review. I ordered a flat white and a chocolate cupcake, and my friend ordered a long black and a rocky road cake in a jar. My flat white was excellent, and my cupcake was rich and moist, with plenty of icing. I tried my friend’s long black and although I’m not usually a fan of that style of coffee, I thought it was delicious, with a good ratio of coffee to water. Her rocky road cake was also very good. I really enjoyed Lava Carts and would recommend it to everyone.
