We're going to get sued about dropping the rally

Rallysport mag is warning that the decision to drop ACT Government funding is in breach of a contract and could see us getting sued:

Our story broke the news that the ACT Government was currently in discussions with CAMS to try and opt out of a contract, which doesn’t expire until the end of 2008, to run the event.

We have now learned that a delegation from CAMS have met with the ACT Government to try to resolve the situation, and that the CAMS representatives suggested to the Government that any breach of that contract could end up in court.

I’m sure we’ll be told there’s nothing to worry about right up until we get stung for millions.

“The ACT Government currently invests about $750,000 for the Rally of Canberra through the tourism and events budget,” Barr said.

That would be about 10 grassby statues, or 2 summernats, or 0.005 GDEs.

Because people want to watch it.

more to the point, why do they broadcast cricket live?

“why is it it not broadcasted live in Oz”

Its a very difficult event to broadcast live. Its not like its a nice 2 hour package it goes for 3 days or more.

And if they sue, that will make any other government wanting to fund this minority event think twice.

If world rallying is such a big deal, why is it it not broadcasted live in Oz?

Wouldn’t this be the same deal as with the race through the Parliamentary Triangle which Labor got rid of shortly after it gained office? – eg, while breaking the contract is going to invoke a penalty clause this will be lower than what the government was going to have to fork over to support what’s proven to be an unsuccessful event?
