We're going to have a sex review

The Liberals’ Vicki Dunne is making supportive noises to Simon Corbell’s unpublished musings that he’s going to set up a review of the Prostitution Act by the Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Justice and Community Safety.

“Mr Corbell says a regulated sex industry is better than one forced underground through prohibition.

“But important as that might be, it must also be regulated effectively. Contrary to Mr Corbell’s view, and based on what ACT Policing told the Estimates Committee this year as well as the evidence-at-large, particularly the death of the young person, I do not accept that the regulatory system for the ACT’s sex industry is effective.

“A review of the Act therefore is not only timely, but essential if we are to create the best and safest possible environment for workers and consumers in the sex industry.

Getting in place a regular regime of unexpected inspections seems like a logical step, but has eluded us in the past.

Sounds like cockwash to me. One idiot overdoses and the government feels compelled to consider”protecting” everyone with more bullshit laws.

Imagines a day in the life of a government appointed brothel safety inspector……

Inspector: Good evening Madam as part of the revised prostitution act I am conducting a suprise inspection, now if you and your employees could submit to this breathalyser test.

Sex worker: How bout we blow you and call it even?

Inspector: Fair enough…….(unzips)…….. I love this job

With regard to safe work places, there would have to be some positions outlined in the Kama Sutra that would at the very least require a risk assessment to be carried out prior to “commencing work”.

Slightly OT, does a Catholic hooker insist on the client wearing a condom?

It would be nice if ORS actually inspected the brothels for underaged or drugged up prostitutes.

Is it an offence to work under the influence of drugs? I don’t think the WorkSafe Inspectors have the power to test workers, do they (unsure)? Think of the level of cooperation between the police and WorkSafe to organise that one!

The inspector could issue an Improvement and/or Prohibition notice under Part 3, Div 3.1, Section 21 (the worker being a self employed person in most cases) – Failure to provide a safe workplace and safe systems of work. Could you imagine attempting to prove that the worker’s drug use was unsafe? And the requirement to display the notice at the workplace – does the worker tape it to the wall next to the bedside table? 😉

As for inspecting brothels for underage workers, it is my understanding that the police would be responsible for that, although I am happy to be corrected.

It would be nice if ORS actually inspected the brothels for underaged or drugged up prostitutes.

Obvious candidate for a ‘fact finding’ mission.

I thought that was an Amsterdam thing?

Coooool! When does ‘consultation’ start?
