West Belconnen fire forces evacuations

Yesterday afternoon driving home I noticed smoke rising from somewhere in West Belconnen. Due to the nature of smoke, I couldn’t pinpoint where it was coming from, but today the ABC tells me it was caused by a fire at a wrecker’s near Holt.

A number of houses were evacuated because of the fire, which took firefighters two hours to get under control. I guess it’s good some lessons have been learnt and they’re now getting people out sooner rather than later but it sure must have ruined some people’s lovely Saturday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is as yet unknown.

At least you weren’t down the Bay yesterday. I couldn’t get home from Ulladulla and had to go through Wollongong as Burrill Lake was on fire, as was Sassafras (road from Nowra to Braidwood) and the poor bloke who died at Kangaroo Valley because the branch fell on him.

A simple 3hr round trip turned into 6-7hrs.

Did ABC 666 mention it at all? I bet they just kept pumping sport over the air. God help us if we get another fire on a weekend or in the evening when there is no local content.
