A 38-year-old Weston man was caught drink driving on Sunday morning (September 4) with a reading more than four times the legal limit.

Around 2.15am police stopped a vehicle on Streeton Drive in Weston in order to conduct a roadside breath test on the driver. The driver undertook a breath test, which returned a positive result.

The man was arrested and taken to Woden Police Station where he returned a breath alcohol reading of 0.241. As a full licence holder, he is subject to a 0.05 blood alcohol level. This man has been convicted of drink driving on five previous occasions, and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

Sergeant Jason Kennedy, Acting Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations said this latest incident is very alarming given the man’s previous offending and high reading detected.

“It should be very concerning to all road users that people like this purposely drive on our roads with absolutely zero consideration for other people’s safety” he said.

Last week (August 29 to September 5), ACT Policing caught a total of 17 drink-drivers, 11 of whom were repeat offenders. Eight of the drivers were holders of restricted licences, which carry a zero blood alcohol requirement.

Oh boy – I bet they’ll throw the book at him! I predict a fine of at least $100!

My moneys on a good behaviour bond – he hasn’t killed anyone yet, so no suspension until then.

Remember the magistrates are well underpaid so why should they hand out tough sentences or fines, especially to a repeat offender. Maybe the magistrates should be paid on commission, the tougher the penalty handed out, the higher their pay/bonus for that week.

Luckily, the focus has lately been on mobile phone using drivers, which have accounted for so many deaths in the ACT, I think the figure is……um…wait, it’ll come to me……it’s um……hang on a sec….almost there……on the tip of my tongue……um….none!

But heavan forbid if we should take a licence off or jail a recidivist drink driver!!!!

Right-O mister policeman.. and what exactly should all us concerned road users be doing about this situation? If you, as the AFP cant stop this guy from breaking the law 5 times, what exactly are all us road users meant to do, other than be very concerned? Are we meant to stop driving on the road?

If you tie this guy to a post in Garema place, then by all means feel free to tell the general public. To simply tell us we should be concerned because they (our police force) are toothless against repeat criminal offenders, what exactly do they hope to achieve, other than showing drink drivers that you can get away with whatever the hell you want?

I’m not sure why you are having a go at police. They would feel even more frustrated than you, as they put in the effort to get these guides and the judiciary sees fit to do nothing about it.

Dvaey’s just trying to get a bite.

As a recidivist offender, he should not have a licence (not that a disqualified licence stops people from driving). Once the poor, underpaid magistrates start handing out custodial sentences for recidivist drink drivers, rates of recidivism might begin to go down.

Yep – totally agree!

Nobs like this will keep driving pissed, until they get locked up.

Unfortunately, they normally have to cause a massive accident with casualties before they get locked up.

Yep, time to start amputating repeat drunk drivers’ legs above the knee so they can’t reach the pedals.

“Very alarming”? In what way? If a persistent offender is allowed to hold a license, what do you think he will do? If he is not punished for his dangerous crime, why should he change?

Caught 5 times already? That’s ok- he still has 4 chances left before he attends the big house if last weeks ‘Ninth time lucky post’ is any guide.

Pissed as a poet on payday…

Yes, it is, and it certainly isn’t limited to DUI and it’s something I see daily.
