Having shut down or removed all the fun parts of Weston Park and erected an enormous simulated graveyard in the form of the SIEV X memorial Katy Gallagher brings word that the site now has a Conservation Management Plan to keep it in its dismal condition.

The park, which is used for informal gatherings and picnics as well as large organised sporting events such as cross country and triathlons, was listed on the ACT Heritage Register in August 2011.

It contains many buildings and gardens of historical significance to the establishment of Canberra’s landscapes, including the English Garden, Hobdays Cottage, Yarralumla Nursery and plantings by well-known figures such as Thomas Weston and Lindsay Prior.

“The Plan identifies, outlines and evaluates the multiple Heritage values of Weston Park will guide ongoing management of Weston Park to ensure consistency with the area’s heritage values and for enhancing and promoting its special qualities,” the Chief Minister said.

“The Plan can be used to assess the suitability of future plans for the park will also inform a review of the draft Weston Park Master Plan which was prepared in 2009 and enable it to be finalised consistent with heritage values.

For those with an interest the plan is online.

FYI, as of last Friday the train was still running.

Seems odd that they can heritage list it and then significantly modify it. I guess they’re trying to protect the “future” heritage but that seems paradoxical.
