Wet weather wedding photos

Getting hitched next weekend and it’s looking like there might be some rain about. We’ve had some places picked for photos but they’re all a bit outdoorsy, so looking for some suggestions of scenic locations that might be a bit more sheltered from the elements.

The ceremony’s at Gold Creek and the reception at the Kurrajong, so ideally we’d be looking for something near either of those or on the way between them, though willing to make a bit of a detour for some nice shots. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

As I understand it you can’t take wedding photos at OPH unless you’re having the function there. Shots on the front steps are OK though.

queanbeyan railway station was good for us. and the photographer even managed to time it when there was a train. we amused quite a full train as we took photos on the train and on the platform…

What about Kings Hall inside Old Parliament House?

I was going to suggest OPH too, but why stop at Kings hall? I think weeding shots from inside the old Rep’s and Senate chambers would be a bit of a hoot and certainly novel.

and that should have been ‘wedding’ not ‘weeding’.

Hire pome bastard have you seen his photos? Awesome!

That’s very kind of you, but landscapes I my thing, and I’m utter cr@p at portraiture.

I would never risk the ire of someone by even pretending to be able to shoot a wedding!

Thanks for all the suggestions. As luck would have it, looks like it’s going to be fine on the weekend anyway…

It’s a public location so there shouldn’t be a problem although there are rules against commercial type photos from some locations there. Just have a word to the guards before setting up and there should be no problems, or just wait until one of them comes across for a chat. They don’t always, it depends on the guard on duty. They see enough photographers up there at odd hours that they aren’t too bad about it. Just don’t get in the way of others and block foot traffic too much.

Ever tried taking a photo of the building from anywhere other than the front. 🙂

Things have certainly changed since I was studying and stayed on the roof for a few hours for a couple of nights taking photos for an assignment. Didn’t get so much as a g’day out of the guards then. Mind, we don’t even have 24 hour roof access now anyway.

*sigh*

I also suggest the gazebo at Glebe Park – so green and will look beautiful…

Dont bother with the Hyatt though – they only allow wedding photos to be taken in their premises if you are having your wedding reception there. We tried to get permission for our wedding photos last year and they said no even though we were staying there for our wedding night.

Congrats! Hope you have a lovely wedding!

Well there’s the aviary at Gold Creek, those beautiful birds there would enhance any photo.

There’s also the “Genuine Tudor English pub,” which Oh I’m sorry, I just cannot type for laughing now…..

And if it’s cloudy and rainy, you’ll get much nicer pictures. The light works much better, the colours really kick up, peoples’ eyes aren’t scrunched up and their skin looks softer. A ski resort photographer I knew reckoned he always sold more photos taken on cloudy/snowy days, he tried not to take shots on sunny days.

Erm, stating the obvious here, but what about the covered vernadah at the Kurrajong.

Not sure who your photographer is, but I suspect they would have experience with this issue and most likely have a few locations up their sleeves.

My wedding was supposed to be outside, but it rained so we had a back-up, luckly. The good thing was it stopped raining after the ceremony, so we had our photos at the Botanical Garden, which looks awesome after a shower. The shots were great.

Ha! Well putting aside that the good looks of my bride off-set the negative effects of me being in the pics, yes – they were great shots, with the ability to get perfect lighting a big plus, and the whole situation was very comfortable to boot.

Wet weather led to our wedding photos being in the photographer’s studio.
Afterwards we realised how rare studio wedding shots are…

Were they good though ?

ian potter house, by the science dome, is a great setting with lots of alcoves and balconies to use to cover from rain (and it is only key that youstay dry, the photographer can sort themself out! then the dome next door is also good, as is film and sound archives and a host of other buildings in and around anu.

or you could go for a more urban look and hunt out some undercover spaces in civic – upstairs at that plaza where electric shadows used to be, for instance, in the rondola in glebe park…

happy wedding!

I’d consider going into the aviary at Gold Creek, and involving some of the beautiful birds there in shots…

Though it’s still a bit outdoorsy

Maybe something in or around the National Museum of Australia.

If it is at the chapel in Gold Creek, the photos could be quite stunning with the rain showing through the glass wall behind you. I wonder if you could even place some coloured lights outside to show it off better?

One friend got married in the rain, and it was kind of romantic hearing the rain on the roof.

We had a naming ceremony for one of our daughters at the Atrium. It is lovely.

You could possibly even get some quite romantic photos in a lavishly decorated hotel room, and I mean that in an innocent way. But something kind of rich and lush and royal-looking.

I’m with Grundy!

It doesn’t rain in Canberra. And I won’t believe it does until I’m wet.

It wont rain…
This is canberra remember!

The forecast is for 5 days of rain… I doubt we get 1 day. 🙂

The Atrium at the Hyatt (rear entrance) is always full of photographers and Brides – I imagine you need to ask them for the okay but it looks very photogenic

Nice shots to be had in front of the fireplace at the Kurrajong, also consider the rose garden at OPH if it’s just drizzling.

The sculpture garden at the National Gallery. You can get some really nice shots amongst the mist over the pond.

The copper dome at the ANU creates as undercover area and is quite visually dynamic. Also check out ANU House as it has an enclosed courtyard surrounded by nice covered walkways. You might need to check out if you would be allowed to take photos there.

Go for a drive this weekend and see what else is around that area.

Also, Kurrajong might have some interesting areas you can look at- ask the staff where other people have posed in the past and see what you find.

PS- Have a wonderful wedding day!
