Does anyone have the background story to the aircraft smoke sign over Canberra today?

UPDATE: Our eye on the street has sent in two non-composited photos of the sky writing as it happened.

“Japan Say Sorry Penis”.

I don’t get it.

I might use this sky writing idea next time the boys get into trouble or one hits the other –

“Nathan say sorry to Ben”.

I might use a Tonka truck instead of a butterfly though.

I thought it was a butterfly, which means LIFE. What the caterpillar perceives as the end, to the butterfly is just the beginning.

Hate to say but the symbol looks more like a C$%k.

I expect the WWII rape victim, a Japanese woman aged about 90 who is at Parliament House today as an honoured guest, won’t see your post PBO, so I guess any careless-seeming tone and intent don’t matter a lot. She was interviewed (in translation) on RN I think yesterday and sounded very dignified.

How sorry should they be after having 2 nuclear bombs dropped on them.
Just put it behind us and get on with life.
They are nice people now.
Let all be forgiven.

Thanks for the information!

Er, probably should have mentioned that the campaign was to do with ‘comfort women’, rather than POWs. Sorry.

I do know that Japan apologized for POWs in WWII in may this year along with a few other apologies for the war… might have something to do with that?

Correct! Amnesty International have been working on a petition recently to achieve this. They gained 10,000 signatures last week and planned on going to Parliament to put forward the petition. I assume this took place today. The central image in the campaign was a butterfly, which I believe is the image in the top corner of the sky.

From AmnestyOz twitter account:

“We’re in Canberra today meeting MPs with #ComfortWomen survivor Gil Won-Ok and skywriting “Japan Say Sorry” over Parliament House”

Its two days early. V P Day is the 15th of August.

I hope Japan responds with sky writing too –

“Japan says: WTF?”

Maybe it was an apology in broken english.

“Japan… Say… Sorry”

I had some information (although I don’t know why the message in the sky was posted today). The strange symbol looks like a butterfly. The “Japan say sorry” probibly relates to the use a women in Japan as sex slaves during WWII . See- http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0%2C21985%2C21327192-5005961%2C00.html

a curious mixture of mushrooms, sympathy for whales and a lottery win.
