What a sensational day for a walk

So, what better way to spend Fathers day, than going for a stroll with the family. We went down to Pinnacle Nature Resrve (Springvale Dve in Hawker), and went for a walk through the hills and bush. And what a magnificent walk it was.

Given that we are living in the bush capital, what are some of the favourite and not so favourite bush parks around our town? Where do you head for an hour stroll, an afternoon walk, or an all day hike?

+1 for Shepherds Point.
+1 again for Jaramlee.

Burnt Stump Hill +1. For more of a challenge try it on a mountain bike.
Watched an echidna pottering around up there. they are so oblivious to the world around them.

I usually head off from near the Macgregor shops and head upstream towards latham, taking in the boardwalk in Umbagong park and keep gpoing until I hit ginninderra drive, then cross over the creek and come back.

If you want to try a bit of a longer walk you can start from Ginninderra Ck out the back of Macgregor/Dunlop on the road to the Jaramlee farm.

Awesome guys. Haven’t heard of some of these places before, will most definitely have to give them a go.

Tough walk there peter – Only done it once – but its well worth the walk.

Awesome views, yet to do it with the Camera and kit though..
There is a bench at the top and a bowl chained to it for your dog to drink its water.

Personally, I find the nylon fold up bowls a godsend, One lives in my boot with a bottle of water but its still a great gesture by someone in the community.

dan, the view from tralee is worth the short hike up the hill, it isn’t a steep walk, and the view is amazing. I am thinking that i will set up there for the next dry day with approaching storm…

the overpass is off henry melville cres, walk through to the other side, straight and then up to the right. there is a gate to negotiate & then up past the reservoir. view at the reservior is pretty good, but further up is just wonderous.

One of the many reasons that I love Canberra, is the ease of access to good, open, walking, and with such quality views.

As the Pinnacle has been noted already (and as most here know I’m a devotee of the Pinnacle) how about a walk up and over the twin peaks of Urambi Hills, taking in the seats on the tops for a spot of meditative thought.

I usually head off from near the Macgregor shops and head upstream towards latham, taking in the boardwalk in Umbagong park and keep gpoing until I hit ginninderra drive, then cross over the creek and come back.

Quite nice on a clear frosty morning.

Thanks Thumper. I take the little one out in the pram pretty regularly and it’s always good to scope new walks close to home.

As pretty as it is, I think we’re all getting sick of the sight of Pegasus and that side of things. I love to head out to Mt Ainslie/Mt Majura (which was *packed* on Sunday) but it’s not always possible.

I have recently moved to gilmore, and went for a walk through the underpass under the monario highway and up a steep road uphill to possibly the best views of the tuggeranong valley I have ever seen. below me was adventure paintball, which makes me realise that i can walk there – so can combine exercise and fun.

The map tells me that i am in tralee, and the road runs next to the old rail line for a while, but it is breathtaking to look down on the valley – I have only ever looked from the other direction, from booroomba rocks, but the accessibility of this site makes me wonder why it isn’t used as a photography venue? i would love to get the camera out when a summer storm comes through, over the hills, it would be magic.

Along Ginninderra creek near Macgregor early in the morning. Simply beautiful.

Thumper, where do you go to get there? Is that past the golf course development?

Bedroom to coffee machine. I often make a diversion to the study on the way, and always on the way back.

Sometimes I go in the big blue room later, but never for long.

i’ll second the murrumbidgee corridor 🙂

Walked from point hut to pine island and back yesterday, and it was prettyful. 🙂

The hills and ridges of Canberra Nature Park provide spectacular views and an opportunity to get up close our native birds and animals:

* A stroll along the spine of Red Hill/Davidson Trig would have to be a highlight – with spectacular views on either side.

* Walking around the northern edge of Fadden along the ridge within Wanniassa Hills Nature Reserve is also pretty.

* The hills along the ACT/NSW border in Goorooyaroo Nature Reserve (Old Joe, Gecko Hills) with a side trip to Burnt Stump Hill provide a view of the ACT not familiar to many.

* Mt Ainslie, Black Mt, Mt Taylor and Tuggeranong Hill are well worth the puffing to get up. The tar road up Mt Majura is suprisingly easy with great views of the planes taking off.

Maps of almost all the Canberra Nature Park reserves can be found here:

The Molonglo Gorge is suprisingly close to Queanbeyan, but feels far from anywhere. If you were to time it right you’d be able to see the Sydney-Canberra train rumbling through the gorge.

The Hall Village Heritage Walk not well publicised, but would be worth a wander if you are up there for the markets.

The Cotter and Murrumbidgee Corridor have some nice walks along the water (head down early or late and find a platypus or wombats!)

Tidbinbilla is great for families. Have a gentle stroll around The Sanctuary, then follow it with a BBQ at the adventure playground/picnic area, then maybe search for some Koalas.

The shops and back.
