For some time now we have had a bird with a curious call which I can only describe as a two tone coo – eee, repetitive and penetrating.

It kicks off at about 4.30 am. and continues through the day.

Can anyone please identify?

We “had” one of these near us… It is no longer alive…. RIP.

It took one look at ‘the neighbours’ and committed suicide?

It’s now an EX-parrot.

Sorry to dig up an old post.

I have one of these fellas living near me at the moment. Am I the only one who enjoys his call?

I find it particularly amusing the higher pitched and more frantic the calls become but then he resets and begins again. Almost as if his prospective female has entered his area only to shy away at the last second.

I am able to sleep through the night calling most of the time though and can understand it would be pretty awful if you couldn’t. But I am loving waking to his calls.

That’s not the annoying bird near Dickson pool is it?

This is the one that sounds like the chime your fridge gives you if you leave the door open too long- or is that another pain in the arse bird I am thinking of?

I only read the first half pf the first sentence of the first paragraph, but I bet you’re hearing a koel.

This is also known as the “brain fever bird” as it will send you stone cold barking if one sets-up camp near your place for the steamy summer nights.

This subject is raised every year. Is there a psychologist out there who can tell us why the Koel’s call is so bloody annoying. Is it the sound or just our anticipation that it will go on and on and on and on?

I’m sure that the CIA has done research into that sort of thing…

Personally,I don’t mind birdsong. But that’s because it says I have to on my licence.

Someone’s a little tipsy. I meant to say that’s because it says I have to like it on my licence. Cheers.

Only tipsy? Not as p1ssed as a poet on pay day?

This thing you call a ‘pay day’ sounds interesting. But we poets know little of this custom, despite the primitive rhyme.

The best thing is that they fly back up north around March before i’ve gone cuckoo.

No prizes for guessing it’s simply the fact that it’s so farking loud!

Also often nicknamed the storm bird because it usually seems to be at its loudest when the weather is inclement.

Yep, we have a koel near our house. Sometimes I like it because it’s seems like such a ‘bush sound’. Sometimes it drives me nuts if I start paying too much attention to it. They’re not the most creative song birds, are they?

Of course you’re referring to this bugger of a bird that wakes me occasionally as well

Could be the Common Koel, it has a coo-ee sounding call and a habit of being up and about when any decent bird would be in bed. Also known as the Stormbird. It looks like a crow with pinkeye.

It sounds like the Koel bird that are found in the Eastern parts of Australia. There was one that came around our area in Tuggeranong and would start it’s call early in the morning and throughout the day and was in our tree for a while. Didn’t get a lot of sleep!! If you google about it, it’s quite interesting as they are looking for a mate, hence the persistent noise!!!

It’s a common koel . From the link:

“The male Common Koel advertises its presence by a loud ascending whistle or ‘koo-el’, monotonously repeated; the call of the female is a repetitive ‘keek-keek-keek-keek’. Males often call throughout the day and well into the night.”

Note the last bit of that sentence. Annoying wee blaggards.
