What bug is this?

Dannybear has sent this one in for help from the hivemind:

Hello! wondering if anybody knows what this is?

a yellow thing poked out of it for a second but not long enough to ID, its about 6 inches long, thanks!

It reminds me of something that was once on the X Files – a fluke. Had a flatmate who was obsessed with that program and I always remember that episode.

I’ve never seen one of these things but it looks really fascinating – especially if it occasionally sticks it’s head out.

Thanks for posting – been meaning to google this for a while now! Saw one a few years ago in Hughes, and have found two in the last few weeks in Kambah.

Yes what poetix said, but I have not seen one for years………… Used to see them all the time when I was a wee girl.
