Well according to this ABC story you can buy a Convention Centre if you’re the Govt, as long as you’ve got the $30mil to go with it to carry out the upgrades.

There is also this media release from Ted Quinlan.

I like the statement that Convention Centres don’t make money, sounds to me like an excuse for poor management.

You can buy a really nice fruit bun for $1 at the bakery in the Erindale Centre.

Ahh, but Thumper – would you have managed to scrape together $30 million for the refit?

Aren’t they supposed be building a new you-beaut convention centre as part of the revamped civic?

If so, then isn’t this money down the drain? Mind you, I’d rather they tart-up the existing Convention Centre as opposed to building a new one.

Well at first glace this would be a deal which makes the intercontinental group happy in the short term (which is what they care about) while making the ACT taxpayer happy in the long term.

far preferable to just giving a private company our money to run their business.

the interesting thing will be which companies get the contracts, and how much they deliver for their $30 million.

Anyway, good to see something getting done.
