These are your words Jethro, not mine but on the subject of the execution of the muslim woman in Afghanistan, I haven’t heard any condemation of same from local muslims so I can only conclude that they condone it as well as endorsing it as you suggest.

The girl who made my ham and salad sandwich today only asked if I wanted salt or pepper. She didn’t condemn that incident at all during our conversation. In fact neither did I. Oh my god we both must condone it then. I didnt realize everyone had to go round condemning every act of barbarism worldwide or else they must obviously support and condone it.

Thanks for pointing that out.

You know perfectly well what you were hinting at Dungfungus.

And I didn’t know local Muslims were required to speak out against every attrocity that occurs in Afghanistan.

I haven’t heard you speak out against the fact America executes mentally ill people. This must mean you support these actions.

Do they have scheduled public executions?

Yes, but please hurry up, your non arrival has thrown the schedule into some disarray.

😀

Good one!

Have the Muslims living in Canberra publically executed anyone recently?

I know the Christian Right in America is massively in favour of execution. By your logic, Australian Christians must also be.

How did someone manage to get Muslims and Islam into this? One church, the first one discussed is Greek Orthodox. Christian. Geddit? The second one is Coptic Orthodox. Christian. Geddit? We have no Islamic places of worship that I know if in Kaleen. We have many Christian ones with four purpose-build churches and two or three other denominations who meet in school halls etc.

Have to go as far as Lyneham for a Buddhist temple, Spence or Civic for a Muslim musalla, Weston for the Bahá’í centre and probably southside for a synagogue.

Dungfungus’s comment was clearly having a dig at the proposed Mosque in Gunghalin.

His comment was most likely referring to the awful execution of an accused adulteress in Afghanistan that was publicised in the media this week. He obviously meant to suggest that the barbaric actions of a small number of Muslims in Afghanistan means Canberra’s Muslims don’t deserve a place of worship in their home-town.

He used this thread (which would otherwise have been a perfectly normal discussion on religious architecture) to push this bigoted point of view.

I was simply responding to his bigotry by pointing out that Muslims are not the only people who endorse capital punishment, and that not all religious folk adhere to the extreme viewpoints of the religious radicals.

If local rumours are true, they started building this church ages ago, (15 years-ish) but ran out of money to finish it. As more money was raised, they finished bits and pieces of it.

I haven’t seen it for a while, and I don’t remember it ever looking this good. I guess they finally raised enough to finish it!

I’ve lived within a few hundred yards of the site since ’86. Yes it wasn’t that good looking in the early years. The stained glass and the tiles made a huge difference.

There is enough parking.

I bet those bells are pretty loud … and clearly not enough carparking.

Ahh, caught out by a lack of Kaleen knowledge.

There isn’t much to know. Don’t leave your car parked there overnight without a valid insurance policy. That’s about it.

I really like the way they have built another building on the same site (to the left of this pic it sits) and they have Bricked in the windows (bricks are on the inside) I have a pic just unsure of how to add straight to this page.

Do they have scheduled public executions?

Jesus, that’s a bloody horrid eyesore.

It looks like it’s made out of almond paste and gingerbread.

Your looking at the Mosque on Maribyrnong Ave.

It is a Coptic Orthodox church, not a mosque. Hint… see the cross on top?

Meh, I don’t do religion, I got told it was a Mosque, I can of course tell you the difference between a Cortina and Escort at 2km’s, just not buildings.

Yes, it’s been there since I was a wee lass – at least 15 years IIRC. Never been inside but I’ve always admired the lovely coloured glass and the bell towers.

That’s a fantastic looking building. So nice to see a building that isn’t just glass and steel.

No Johnboy, that is a different orthodox church (Coptic). It isn’t quite in Georgina Crescent, but on Maribyrnong Crescent. They are about 200m apart.

Psst, JB I just looked at it, it’s there.

New??

I worked at Supabarn 10 years ago and it was an old structure then.

Have a look at the the corner of Rubicon Street and Georgine Crescent, definitely a nice big church there.

patrick_keogh3:27 pm 10 Jul 12

BTW Helen needs to learn how to drive Google Streetview. It is certainly there.
Further, the church is at least ten years old, certainly since before Streetview arrived.
What has happened recently has been some additional building activity, on the left of the driveway as you look at it from Georgina Crescent. I had always coveted the stack of terracotta tiles that you can see in the streetview image next to the driveway but now they are gone.

I hope it doesn’t interfere with our caucasian way of life. Oh, and the parking, yeah, almost forgot the parking.

I can tell you its Orthodox just by looking at it.
And according to Flickr its All Saints Orthodox.

(Also, its not new.)
