Over on Yahoo Answers some twink has decided to ask the great mass of ignorance what they think about the name “Canberra”.

So far overwhelmingly negative.

South Australia produces many full-bodied wines in barrels with balanced acid.

Don’t know who Irem is or why they ask the question. Never questioned why “Canberra’ was named that name myself until now.

My perspective is that:

* From what I’ve read, Canberra is derived from Aboriginal language to mean “meeting place”. If so, I am happy with this as it is congruent with Government/Parliament et al.

* “Canberra” is a soft word and not associated with violent confrontation.

* Canberra is conducive to Family and civil-rights although the latter is somewhat carried overboard by a few.

* Canberra is generationally linked to Australian history, ethnic diversity – look at all the clubs and social groups that have come and gone from the 50’s to present (and the few still here); Snowy Mountain Scheme; and the High Court.

* Before and after self government, ‘Canberra’ is still a location of choice for ‘glamour’ professionals and retirees. Not so good for those who provide quality of life in the background – apprentices, hospitality staff, Ambos, Nurses, Police lower than SGT, shop assistants, social workers, etc…

* Despite external interference from politicans and internal efforts from (assholes) Bogans to Zealots to bring Canberra down to the lowest common denominator of government and social structure, I choose to live here.

Yes, but they’re asking about Canberra as a baby name. I should hope it’s an overwhelmingly negative response – it’s a stupid name for a person.

wX should be working on Canberra’s marketing campaigns.
