What does Garry Moore mean by Canberra-isation

New Zealand’s National Business Review has a strange article on the former Mayor of Christchurch who is not happy about the treatment of commercial landowners post earthquakes.

But this is the bit where we come in:

“The only groups that will be able to afford these large blocks of land are big corporates from Australia.

“It’s the Canberra-isation of Christchurch.

Is anyone who speaks kiwi able to explain?

I think he could be referring to the difficulty small businesses have in buying commercial properties in Canberra. Compared to other cities like Adelaide & Melbourne where it’s quite common to be able to purchase your business premises, here they are all owned by QIC or similar & you either have to rent or go somewhere else (as in not Canberra).

Forgive me, but i was under the impression that it’s impossible for anybody but the government to ‘own’ land/property in the A.C.T. All property is sold on 100 year leases that are for a nominal fee of about a dollar or something like that, is that not accurate? A small point of issue, I know, but please indulge me.

CHOIIIICE

not really challenging is it?

Using ‘Canberra’ as a proxy for ‘Australia’

Makes perfect sense to me since the on.y people allowed to buy undeveloped land in Cannerra are the developers. The rest of us buy developed land (I.e: roads, sewage, water, electricity, probably as part of a house+land package). As a result we have McMansions on tiny blocks serviced by narrow streets that can’t fit trucks or busses. Thus, “Canberra-isation.”

Well, isn’t it obvious?
The author obviously didn’t understand the Kiwi accent
The Mayor said “It’s the Cannibalisation of Christchurch”
Or something about chups…
