Ever seen a dog that looks uncannily like their owner or been told your pup is the spitting image of you? You’re not alone – and it seems your choice of canine companion may also reflect your personality, lifestyle and values.

Whether it’s a spirited mini or a gentle giant, the breed of dog you choose to welcome into your life can speak volumes about who you are.

Cynthia Dimond and her team are uniquely positioned to explain this phenomenon. All self-professed dog lovers, they spend their days working with Canberra pooches of all shapes and sizes in Manuka’s boutique doggy daycare and grooming salon, The Waggington.

“Many dog owners choose a breed based on desirable traits – this includes looks, but I think it goes a little deeper,” Cynthia says.

“I’m sure we choose dogs that look and act like us because, on some subconscious level, we recognise them as familiar.

“Our pups also pick up on and mirror our interests, personalities and emotions, becoming more and more like us over time.”

With this in mind, what does The Waggington team think your dog’s breed says about you?

Labrador

Labrador owners are uber-social, enjoy the outdoors and are always up for a spontaneous adventure. You probably love to have fun out and about, but won’t say no to a night in with home-made pizza.

French Bulldog

Also known as ‘Frenchies’, the French Bulldog is a playful, affectionate and vocal breed. The same can be said about their owners, who are generally cheerful, upbeat individuals. But take note – both often have a stubborn streak!

Standard Poodle

According to The Waggington’s senior groomer, standard poodle parents are often professionals who take great pride in their appearance.

“Just like their owners, standard poodles love to be pampered, are highly intelligent and generally very social,” she says.

“They know how to make a good first impression and enjoy exploring Canberra’s best food and wine destinations.”

Maltese

If your dog is Maltese, you’re probably a talkative person who loves deep and meaningful conversations. Authenticity is important to you, though – just because you know everyone’s secrets doesn’t mean you’ll share them.

German Shepherd

People who own a German Shepherd are often independent, authentic and family-oriented. They may be quiet around strangers at first, but get them in a room with their nearest and dearest and you’ll get to see their silly side.

Pomeranian

If you’ve invited a Pomeranian into your life, chances are you take them absolutely everywhere. The Waggington team says many ‘poms’ arrive for their regular haircut in a special carry bag – with accessories attached.

“Pomeranians are the ultimate mini-me,” Cynthia’s senior groomer says.

“Often their owners will introduce them as their ‘baby’. It’s a very special bond.”

Border Collie

Border Collies and their owners are clever and energetic, with an unmatched work ethic. Nothing satisfies them more than excelling in a job they love, but they still know how to kick back and relax after a hard day’s work.

Grooming goes far beyond functional these days. Plenty of Canberrans make a statement by deliberately matching their dog’s style with their own, but some breeds aren’t as low maintenance as people realise.

“If you plan to welcome a collie, schnauzer or any ‘oodle’ breed into your home, be prepared to put in some work to keep them clean, tidy and well-behaved,” Cynthia says.

“Don’t be afraid to ask your groomer for some tips on maintenance at home, especially if your dog has a long, thick or double coat.

“It’s also important to get your pup used to regular grooming as early as possible. The younger they are, the easier it will be to desensitise them, leading to a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved!”
