What else should the ACT Government be aspiring to?

Our Chiefly Leader is flying a kite for a “Vision Zero” on road deaths in the ACT.

This aspirational vision of zero road deaths has been very successful in Sweden where over a number of years less and less people are killed in road accidents.

Which begs the question… what else should we be setting aspirational targets for?

Better gardens? Guaranteed orgasms? Hot lunches?

Should we aspire to, as a community, stamp out foul language?

I mean if we’re going to set totally unachievable targets with no planning to achieve them surely we should be shooting for the sky across the board?

jon’s carp and weed fertiliser side business would sort out the BGA in LBG…

Yes, such a plan would leave us completely unable to project power in the Yarralumla region!

And no nuclear aircraft carriers on LBG by 2015 either.

I’m surprised that a military man like yourself would back such an irresponsible winding backof crucial defence capability in these troubled times!

Oh wait – how about ‘all mischievous internet nerds who make up scurrilous Face Book profiles about Katy tracked down and boiled in oil by 2020’?

deep fried. it would be crunchier…

Removal of all piracy on LBG by 2020.

Which would work in quite nicely with the banning of all supertankers on LBG by 2015.

How about “All executive decisions of the Assembly made by NIMBY self-interest groups by 2009”? It’s an easy give and will provide an immediate ‘good news story’.

I can see the press conference now. The Chief Minister standing next to some frumpy urban activist and proudly announcing that cabinet had managed to abdicate all of its decision making responsibilities in the interests of political expediency and pandering to vocal minorities.

50% reduction in shark attacks in all canberra lakes by 2015.

Oh, and to head off the usual bull$hit arguments, I mean ‘someone has to do something really stupid…’

Cars are amazingly safe. You have to do something really stupid to get killed in one.

An incompetent government with aspirational ideas, and an incompetent opposition with no ideas.

Sums it all up really….

Making cars safer

How much safer do you want cas to get! Your average decent new car comes with ABS, EBD, ESC, air-bags, pre-tension seat belts, crumple zones, safety cells … the list goes on.

.

dodgem cars. the worst driver in the world cant get into trouble. light 2 seater. zero emissions. best of all its fun getting into a traffic jam.

…..and blog writers that know the difference between ‘begging the question” and “asking the question”.

Zero nuclear accidents in the ACT by 2015.

(…or is that just asking for trouble?)

Hmm if the vision of “vision zero” automatically made the project in Sweden succeed, I’m going to create a “vision one million” for my bank account. That means it will automatically work too yes?

Media staff who understand the appropriate use of both ‘less’ and ‘fewer’.

Light rail by 2020 perhaps! Toot toot!

I think we should aim for aspirations that are attainable; like zero tiger maulings by 2020. Or hope for one good article in the Canberra Times per year? Personally I wish my neighbour would aspire to be a better drummer & singer.

Global warming.

Seriously, how cold was it Saturday night? I almost froze to death walking between clubs.

Bridget Jones complained about “granny panties” making her look good but feel bad. Thermals make us guys feel good but look fat. And when you pick up while wearing them, you just you feel guilty. It’s like you cheated because you didn’t bring your “A game”.

RiotACT with no morons.

Relieving the ever increasing tax burden on the common man through strategic and generational financial planning.

Eliminate the selfish gene and propensity for humans to do evil in the ACT.

Stop all genocide from occurring in Gungahlin.

Cull kangaroos without bleeding heart pansies wailing and crying about it for weeks in the press.

I guess you could try and refresh the fleet – make it difficult to keep older cars on the road. But lets be honest: you really are in a spot of serious bother if all you’ve got left to save you are your air-bags … which brings us to driver training …

Sweden has a higher road death rate than the ACT. Their best year 4.5 per 100000 in 2006 has been bested here in 5 of the last 8 years. Of course conditions are not comparable.

No more stuff ups like Rhodium.

Competent Government would be nice, but hey, there’s no way that’ll happen!

Hargreaves not getting caught drink driving – again.

This is a snowball that wont be stopped knowing our Jon. So I did a bit of Googling and found the following on this Vision Zero thing and have found that there are many aspects to the policy with the core things being:-

1/ Reconstructing motor traffic roads to motorways

2/ Providing wire median guard rail on roads that are wide enough to allow for 2/1 travel lanes.

3/ Replacing traffic lights with roundabouts

4/ Reconstructing urban roads with moderate to large traffic volume according to the design principles for 50/30 streets in Vision Zero ( 30 km/h at crossing facilities, 50 km/h elsewhere)

5/ Reconstructing urban roads with low traffic volume according to the design principles for walking speed streets in Vision Zero.

6/ Reconstructing urban access roads with very light traffic volume according to the design of the Vision Zero (target speed of 7 km/h).

7/ Increasing the number of speed cameras

8/ Making cars safer

Call me cynical but what is the bet that Jon will quickly adopt points 4/ to 7/ adopt?

I propose an aspirational target of ensuring every Canberran reaches their potential… that’s a target we can’t fail to reach. The achievers will succeed as will the bludgers who will reach their full potential… of standing in line at Centrelink.

5 days off and 2 days on !

Hear hear! I would even settle for having only 4 days off and 3 on – think of the drop in unemployment figures if we had a rotating system!!

Your Utopia = my Dystopia.

Utopia (covers everything)

No Waste! Oh hang on…

“This aspirational vision of zero road deaths has been very successful in Sweden where over a number of years less and less people are killed in road accidents.”

Because they all drive Volvos – nobody has ever died in a Volvo in a traffic accident!

“Which begs the question… what else should we be setting aspirational targets for?”

No more violence.

No more hate.

An ACT filled with love.

The Raiders winning again.

A prison that functions properly.

Where I work, “aspirational” is the weasel word that translates to “something that will never be achieved”

Aspirational goals are the non-core promises of Labor Goverments.

A perfect local council.

“Homes for Everybody”?
“Every body deserves a good doctor”?

Otherwise, make “Longer lasting sex” an aspirational target?
The language is already vague enough to be non-binding…
