What is going on at Bimberi?

The Liberals’ Vicki Dunne is stamping her feet that Labor’s Joy Burch has nothing to say about the troubled Bimberi youth detention centre:

“Bimberi opened about 18 months ago, but already there is a litany of serious incidents, the latest being one involving serious self harm,” Mrs Dunne said.

Mrs Dunne noted there have been:
· multiple breaches of security by detainees;
· a range of serious assaults on staff;
· lock downs of detainees; and
· incidents of self harm.

“Some of these incidents have resulted in retrofitting measures such as electric security fencing.

It would be nice to hear what’s being done to fix it.

Aah, for the days of youth detention under Kate Carnell,when the old Quamby was constantly empty, and the staff did volunteer work for the Animal Rescue Foundation, waiting for the occasional arrival of a detainee who would invariably be a well-behaved, emotionally stable, misguided middle-class private school student (who had fallen under the baneful and pernicious influence of some ne’er-do-well from a broken home and a state school), patiently serving out their time sitting quietly in their cell, respectful and polite to the staff at all times, all too eager to cooperate with directions…
