What is it with the price of fish in Canberra?

Had fish and chips tonight for tea.

Flabbergasted at the price of fish – $7 a piece.

Just moved from up north where I could get 2 pieces of fish and chips (enough for 2) plus 2 cans of softdrink for $14.50.

My dinner tonight cost $19 just for 2 bits of fish and some mangy chips.

Christ this place is expensive!

Any ideas of where I can get decent fish and chips that don’t cost a fortune?

[ED – Finally, a post about the price of fish]

Hawker chippy, the best chippy in Canberra!

+1. Although it has been a while since I have eaten fish from there (considering where I currently reside has the best seafood in the country) they do keep my family well fed, which is no mean feat.

Higher wages in Canberra = higher house prices = higher costs for goods and services = higher paid people bitching on Riot Act

It’s just the circle of life and a constant source of amusement

So you’re obviously from a coastal town/city ‘up north’?

We are in-land here buddy, so there will be price difference.

Suggestion: Try the fyshwick fresh food markets, their main seafood shop has great little restaurant, prices aint too bad…

I realise we are inland – I’ve moved from inland Queensland (approx 2 hours from Brisbane), so the distances are pretty equal. I’d also like to add that we visited Batemans Bay last weekend, and the fish there was also $7 a piece, and that shop was as close as you can get to the sea without being in it.

We have taken to filling an Esky up from Faros Brothers in Sydney every time we go up and bringing it home to freeze. It’s half the price and better quality – each trip we usually get enough for a month or so.

Can I give you my 100lt esky to fill please???

What’s that got to do with the price of fish? (Yeah, yeah, someone had to say it) 😉

Or the price of eggs in China?

I actually happen to agree with the OP, the stuff you get from the takeaway is hardly fresh (well our local one anyway) & is processed & frozen in boxes that they buy cheaply.

Pur local takeaway changed hands a number of years ago, the old Greek guy was awesome & we could go down there & get one cunbed & one batterd fish & some chips for under 15 bucks.

The new owners put the price up for exactly the same product & now it costs us over 20 bucks for a feed of heart attack.

If something had changed like they were preparing the stuff themselves I could understand but for same old stuff?

I wont buy prawns here either as I dont want to pay 25bucks a kilo for produce that is about to go off & is second rate (black heads, white slime, cant peel them…….).

We do pay top dollar for second rate aquatic food in spots (I mean freshwater as well as some of the trout you buy is not much chop either).

Its true that we arent on the coast, obviously, but how much does it cost to load something onto a truck from Sydney?

That said, the price of fish and chips down the south coast is also pretty high – comparable to Canberra. Presumably only Canberrans buy it?

I don’t know if you noticed, but there aren’t a lot of commercial fishing operations based in Canberra.
