Argh!

The ongoing alien invasion of Canberra continues, as evidenced by all the “What is this” posts we get.

This weeks is from BJ:

Hoping the hivemind knows what this is. Spotted on the Stockyard Spur/Mt Gingera walk a few weeks ago.

I, for one, welcome our sixteen-legged, stinky, cross between Siamese octopus twins and a mushroom, overlords.

And some other pedant can tidy up that abortion of a sentence.

A abstract-centenary-floral-public art tribute symbolising the ACT Legislative Assembly (there are 17 “chook toes” representing the 17 members).
Did I get it right? When do I get the money?

Some things in nature really do shout out: STAY AWAY! 🙂

It’s the shrimp cocktail out of Beetlejuice…

Yep, reckon it’s a Stickhorn (fungus). I’ve had similar appear from my mulch in the form of single red (asparagus-like) spears. Very interesting (and smelly)!

0_0 That is one ugly mushroom!

Sort of attractive in an Audrey sort of way.
Wikipedia tells us :
Aseroe rubra, commonly known as the anemone stinkhorn, sea anemone fungus and starfish fungus
Kingdom: Fungi
Division: Basidiomycota
Class: Agaricomycetes
Order: Phallales
Family: Phallaceae
Genus: Aseroe
Species: A. rubra

So we can all make phallus jokes now. Huzzah!

Its a Stinkhorn and its called that for a reason.

According to google it could be a Red Starfish Fungus or Aseroë rubra.
