What our children think of us.

I walked into the lounge room this evening and as usual, found my two teenage sons chortling over something on the internet. When I asked them what was causing the giggles, the eldest showed me some of the sharpest and harshest Australian political satire I’ve seen in many years.

When I asked where it came from, my eldest said that one of his 15 year old friends at school had been writing it.

So, if you want to know what young people think of politics today, check out https://www.facebook.com/TheRealToneAbet

It’s not all great, but if you’re anything like me it will make you laugh, cringe and shudder all at once. Particularly the panel where Kevin urges Julia to pull the knife from his back “nise n slo pls…”.

Awesome stuff from a Canberra Year 10 boy.

I think I can see John McTernan’s social media unit’e paw prints all over this. 33,000 likes? Unlikely – unless Facebook was paid to promote this. Little “sister site” with an equivalent Julia Gillard …. little sop to balance on the part of the ALP.

um i think you meant to spell it ‘nic…’

o, wiat.

Think of memes like the youth trends in Neuromancer. Case is in his 20s and already too old to follow all the trends although he appreciates and relates to them as a different version of what he was doing as a teenager.

When I was a teenager 10-15 years ago we were still creating this culture. Our parodies were well spelled but irreverent and flippant. Lol hadn’t been created but 1337 was like a battle of wits.

Rage comics, Dolan Duck and Tone Abut developed from there and aren’t my style because nostalgia. In my day we would write a song or play. I think it’s because the culture is more inclusive now, subculture isn’t very important to today’s teenagers so they create shorter jokes that everyone can understand. (At least, they seem more fluid about subculture.)

It’s not for their parents in the same way that the parents of 70s-80s kids freaked out about swear words in music: it’s good but we don’t understand it. I don’t even understand the other subcultures from my age group.

You said “basic level of respect we should give everybody”. The language used in this artist’s depictions do not come close to even a basic level of respect. Is a basic level simply letting everybody live, albeit with a constant personal attack from everyone else in the world? Where is the line that divides respect from insult?
Thanks to this article on RA, this “inconspicuous” web page has now littered the virtual walls of the internet in the same way as graffiti does in a bus shelter. Anyone’s comments supporting it or links directing us to it make it more of a destruction of public property, which the internet can surely can be classed as. Do you own the net, does a private company hold it’s patent? Either way, it is as public as an advertisement on television, an article in a newspaper or a street sign. Public domain is how it’s commonly referred, especially on Facebook.
Thanks for showing your maturity by turning this debate from one pertaining to the topic, to one of personal attack. You have proven my point on how little respect this world has.

The internet isn’t public property. It’s not property. No one owns it, anymore than the air is public property. You can’t ‘deface’ it. Blogs and Facebook pages are like farts, everyone likes their own, and if you encounter one you find really offensive, move on to fresher air.

How is it “an internet version of spray painting on walls of buildings and bus stops”? Doing such a thing defaces public and private property. This does not. If you don’t want to look at it you don’t have to. It’s the internet, Not everyone will enjoy everything but there’s something for everyone. I’m even going to second Comic_and_Gamer_Nerd on this one, l2interwebs.

Also “foul-mouthed”? Please. It’s long been acceptable to use such language in comedy, of which this is a form. Disrespectful? Maybe, but people have to learn that while there is a basic level of respect we should give everybody, getting to a certain stage of society (ie. elected to office, promoted in a company, old, etc.) doesn’t inherently earn them respect with absolutely everyone, they still need to show they’re worthy of it and act in a way that will maintain it. To me their attempts at satire, while sometimes hit and miss, sure, are the beginnings of critical thinking, which I’d much rather young people doing than blindly giving their utmost respect to those who haven’t necessarily done enough to earn it.

You may not like the presentation, but it seems to be getting attention amongst the next generation of adults. You’re entirely welcome to ignore it if you wish. All forms of expression change over time. This is the style of the time, like the onion on your belt.

#12 you admit in your first sentence that you don’t understand it.

This is normal because you aren’t part of the intended audience.

Don’t take it personally.

*sigh*
The ‘style’ is a bit of a rip off of dolan comics.
http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/dolan

I don’t really think the material present is particularly inspired, but the ‘in my day’ angst in this thread is a bit ridiculous. It doesn’t make any sense to you because you’re old. Simple as that.

Oh he knows how to spell. He just chooses not to in that forum.

Exactly right, he knows exactly what he is doing. Very clever, and given a chance, very funny.

It’s amazing that the deliberate misspellings are going over people’s heads and being interpreted as ‘stupid teenagers can’t write properly’, when it is very clearly being deliberately used by the cartoonist as a way of commentating on the quality of the political debate in this country.

The ‘herp derp’ cartoon style is a well established way of conveying the idea that the people/ideas being presented in the cartoon are inane. To ‘fix’ the spelling and presentation would be to remove the bulk of the criticism being made.

No wonder our country is being dominated across all areas internationality
Sport, education standards, literacy, industry, standard of living, we are getting smashed.
Because somehow we have come to believe that Bogan standards are what we should be striving for.

L2 INTERWEBS

Also I do not think you understand the difference between a uneducated bogan and 1337/lol/gamer typing.

I can’t read a word of it, what language is it? Certainly not Engrish. Nothing witty, funny or satirical at all. Also, shows the typical lack of respect our current generation has for anything. If this is what they think of our Nation’s leaders, what are their thoughts about everyone else in Oz?

Respect needs to be earned.

Also, L2 INTERWEBS

L2 INTERWEBS? Had to look it up. Now my IQ has dropped 25%. After attempting to “read” through the presentation another time, I think I’ve lost another 25%.
I re-iterate – It isn’t funny, doesn’t have any clever political satire and reeks of disrespect. It simply hurts my head trying to grasp the “language”, without even analyzing the point of the cartoons.
As for earning respect – If they didn’t have a scrap of respect, how did they get voted into their electorates? Sure, I’ve noticed how politicians are like bickering kids in a playground during parliament, but they are also in charge of our future. Portraying them in this kind of satire doesn’t help to gain any kind of respect at all.
I am not in the least a follower of politics, but what has been portrayed here as something worthwhile to show our younger generation only reinforces my belief that this attitude only promotes the problems in society today. Examples of this are foul language, violence, bullying, illiteracy, a general lack of care or respect for anyone or anything except for an individual’s own “right” to do whatever they please without repercussions.
This as applauded by aceofspades – https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=403804153070797&set=a.374819009302645.1073741828.371602552957624&type=1&theater just proves my point, just look at the responses to someone’s comment, attempting a translation of the text. Nothing but a foul mouthed bunch of faceless people, even though it’s supposed to be “Facebook”
Postalgeek – “Ahead of the pack”?? If mob mentality is what you are talking about, perhaps.
To give something like this praise, something that is pretty much an internet version of spray painting on walls of buildings and bus stops, irks me even more than the garbage itself.

I think there’s some humour in it. The poor spelling and shoddy drawing style is intentional and has been used in other internet memes for some time. Effectively (intentionally or not) it likens our politicians to how 12-15 year olds act on the internet, and really, while pollies may be able to spell, they don’t act that differently.

That’s an insult to 12-15 year olds comparing them to politicians…

Why…back in MY day we had to walk to church uphill both ways! Young people today have no respect! I’m old and the world owes me something!

Also the fact that people of this age are taking an interest in politics is a good sign. Not everyone on RiotACT may be a relatively young internet junkie, but still the kids deserve some props for it.

Yeah – that’s my take, too. I’d love to be able to support it, but jezuz…

+1
The spelling might be deliberate (Christ I hope so) but it’s hard work.

I personally wouldn’t go so far to say it’s ‘some of the sharpest and harshest political satire…in many years’, but humour is subjective, and if he’s engaging people, good for him; it’s good to see a kid his age interested in producing political cartoons and he’ll get better. Still ahead of the pack. Good luck to him.

I’m not a huge fan either but it’s quite good if you like that kind of thing.
