What the hell are they doing to Barry Drive? An explanation

Territory and Municipal Services are letting us know just why they’ve brought traffic to a standstill around Civic.

You’ll be thrilled to know that Simon Corbell’s magic time travelling busway is responsible.

The ACT Government wishes to advise motorists and other road users of amendments to the traffic management for the Belconnen to City transitway project along Barry Drive in O’Connor and Acton.

“Monitoring by Roads ACT has indicated that the single lane closure on Barry Drive, between McCaughey Street and Bolderwood Street, that was erected on Saturday has caused delays to morning traffic,” Director, Roads ACT, Tony Gill said today.

“As a result of this monitoring Roads ACT will now enact the single lane closure outside of peak traffic periods. The lane closure is to allow for the construction of the new bus lane and maintain pedestrian access along the north side of Barry Drive.

Well, duh.

I often wonder if the government do this deliberately to give us a laugh. After all, laughter is the best medicine……

I couldn’t help but notice this morning, that Parkes Way, one of the alternate routes that we’re being advised to take, has roadworks starting on Monday, and to expect delays. So two of the major routes into the City will be slowed down with roadworks at the same time. Awesome.

Given that the closure caused a traffic jam until 10am, I’m dreading what the outcome of putting a bus lane in will be when they put more traffic lights in. More improvements to make the roads a carpark..

For everyone who chooses to drive. The smug people like me will continue to bypass the ‘carpark’ by bike or bus.

what about the lelft lane AFTER mcaughey st?

I come out of mcaughey st and turn left onto barry drive.

Traffic backs up all the way past o’connor shops now because of the wait to turn left onto barry drive. Since they have taken away the left slip lane, you have to wait for the green light now, which only lets in about 5 cars at a time.

Yep typical TAMS planning when they continually fail to properly plan their projects and the impact of closing lanes. Common sense would have mean a study of the traffic movements from all directions and that removing the abilty for cars to turn left off McCaughey St onto Barry Drive would also cause chaos through O’Connor. Easy fix would be the introduction of a left only turn onto Barry Dr controlled by a left turn arrow to allow cars to turn when right turning cars off Barry Dr are.

I’ve heard Tony Gill on the radio a few time and he appears to be a nice guy. However, he is seems too reactive. A bit of forward thinking would help him avoid having to put out spotfires all the time.

Issue: You are doing roadworks on a key entry into the CBD – it is going to cause issues. Things that can be done to mitigate impact:
– doing off-peak lane closures from the start
– have variable message boards along Belconnen Way advising of the impending works and suggesting they take Alt. routes
-speaking to key employers in the area (CSIRO, ANU) to encourage off-peak travel.

Ain’t going to solve the issue completely, but at least be on the front foot.

Meanwhile people getting off the bus will still persist in trying to cross Barry Drive directly, despite the fence in the middle, in order to avoid the extra minute it would take to back up to the crossing…

Why not? That fence is a massive and seemingly pointless pain-in-the-arse.

There needs to be a permanent fence erected along this median strip before someone gets mowed down. Blind corner + bus stop + traffic + idiots = disaster. I’ve written to ACTION and TAMS on the matter, but as per usual received the standard ‘no reply’.

In fact there is no pedestrian access to the ANU at the corner of Barry Drive and Clunies Ross. They have been “working” there for at least a month. So crossing at the lights is hopeless.

It has been my experience that fewer bus commuters are crossing Barry Drive at that point — many more now walk down to the lights at McCaughey street.

Should we bother telling TAMS that it’s “Boldrewood”, not “Bolderwood”?

They’d just change the name of the street to match their ignorance, like they did with Dairy Flat Road.

Should we bother telling TAMS that it’s “Boldrewood”, not “Bolderwood”?

How much are these utter clowns paid again? And no doubt they’ve contracted the work out to the slooooowest company, who will erect cones, dig up the road and then leave it there for months while they wait for a machine.
