A $5 lunch review.

The ANU commons is located in the new swish new Lena Karmel building on the corner of Barry Drive and Marcus Clarke.

They have been advertising $5 lunches and I thought I’d check it out. Today they had a chicken korma or sweet potato soup all for $5. I opted for the Korma and was plesaed to find equal amounts of veges and meat in the standard size serving. It was quite delicious, not too creamy or oily and a good serving for lunch. I’ll definitely be back

Picture is critical- we are used to it with lunch reviews- The chicken could have been swimming in its own tepid, fungal juices for all we know.

I had one of their $5 lunches when they first opened. The food was nice, but their portion sizes were too small (for me at least). I came to the conclusion that other restaurants in the vicinity (Burmese Curry Place and La Pasa before it closed come to mind) were better value at around the $7-8 mark.

It’s at least 20% cooler.

$5 means no picture.

A few comments. First, I thought the $5 meals were only for ANU staff/students. I went once and had to produce my ID card. I don’t think they should limit it to ANU staff/students – but just wanted to raise the issue. Next, when the commons first opened, they were supposed to have $5 breakfasts, lunches and dinners. I went three different times to try breakfast and each time, their chef was sick. I don’t know if they are even offering the discounted breakfast/dinner any more, but if so, just be aware that it may not be that reliable. Finally, I also found the $5 lunch to be delicious and a great value. My dining partner said he still felt a bit hungry – the portions are not huge – but I found it to be just enough for lunch.
