When are the op shops open for donations?

It’s Boxing Day, which means I’m putting stuff in boxes to get rid of so I can make room for all the new stuff the kids were given for Christmas.

But it’s not a good idea to just leave piles of stuff outside the locked-up op shops to be rained on or whatever, and there’s too much to put in the drop boxes. So I’ve been trying to find out when the op shops re-open to drop off stuff.

Based on last year’s Christmas hours on the ACT op shoppers blog, the small shops are likely to be closed til 2011, and the larger shops might be open from Monday.

Anyone spotted signs at their local op shop about opening hours?

if they are canned, unopened and within their useby date there are several options.
oz-harvest, or any of the soup kitchens that operate out of civic etc.

They should be easy enough to find with google.

Is there anywhere to take food ???

I have so many xmas hampers with food that will never get eaten by just one person, might aswell give it away to someone who could use the extra food.

Salvos will collect your washing machine, Mystery2Me, but the charities do not want old televisions. You could try posting to Freecycle.

there’s a couple of second hand whitegoods places in Fyshwick which will take (and pay) for the washing machine.

Secondhand TV’s are worthless these days – could AllClassifieds it for free.

The charity bins at Dickson shops (near Woolies) were being emptied this morning.
I saw at Kippax on Christmas Eve a particularly charitable couple of guys helping themselves to some clothing and furniture that was sitting in front of a charity bin. They took so much stuff they couldn’t close the boot on their white EA Falcon. The Belconnen police were most interested when I passed on a description and rego number of the vehicle to them.

I’ve got a washing machine and t.v. both working, just old – like me 🙂 Anyone know any charities that will come pick them up ???

Thanks wombat and joingler. Have done a drive by of some shops myself, Salvos Woden is indeed open from Wednesday and Vinnies Woden from 4 Jan. Think Tinys might be the place to go, they are more likely to accept old couches and bed bases.

Why wait till these shops are open? Join the ranks of the self-centred, small minded, cheapskate, illiterate, disrespectful, bogan inclined low life that just dumps their garbage at charity bins, or even somewhere in the proximity of the shops. Then adjourn to your cleansed abode and think what a great job/rort that was.

Or not.

I would suggest that the speed camera (life saving) units could be well used for after hours surveillance at these places. Or even just leave something that may, or may not, be a surveillance device in the proximity of bins and shops.

The “Charity” part of charity bin is NOT that you get to dump sh*t for free, ok?

This is not to suggest, for one moment, that the good readership of the Riot are so inclined, but I am sure that we all know someone, who knows someone, who may be inclined towards this kind or crime, and could use a guiding comment.

The End

Anyone who has been to the Dickson shops would have seen the contents of the charity bins spread around into the parking area. Not a pretty sight and one that would or should discourage anyone from putting anything in the bins.

Salvos in Belconnen are open Wednesday I think. Unsure what time

From what I understand.
Salvos stores will be open Wednesday 29/12 to Friday 31/12. They will then be closed until Tuesday 4/1, when they return to normal opening hours.
Vinnies will be closed until Tuesday 4/1.
The two tip shops (Tinys tip shop @ Symonston and the R Shop @ Mitchell waste transfer stations) should be open evey day.
As for any other charity shop, I imagine they will be closed until the new year.
