When Cosmetic surgery goes wrong..... The new look Canberra Times

They started the teasers weeks ago and it got me hooked……“ The new look Canberra time launching Saturday June 5th” I had really predicted a massive change I would go one step further a monumental change, I wanted to walk into my local newsagents and be put in a position of searching high and low for this new look Canberra times, mistaking it for let’s say The Age or The Australian…….

Ok cut the blatant sarcasm…… the Canberra times arrived Saturday June 5th pretty much unchanged, a few cosmetic changes; a new border colour here, a new border colour there… that’s about it.

Although I will say Domain was a vast improvement and I enjoyed the Canberra times ripping off the Sydney Morning Herald’s Jonathan Chancellors Title Deeds with our very own estate agent chaser John Thisleton (and cant wait for him to break some property story’s that are not 4 weeks old like his page 3 attempt on Saturday. Believe RA already covered this and provided him the clues.)

While we’re at it, can the CT website update its photo that goes with any crime scene. A mid 90s(?) NSW Police commodore is looking a bit out of date now. Couldn’t they use one of the cool looking AFP falcons instead

Won’t anyone please think of the psychologically projecting taxpayers!

Not psychological projection; a deliberate reminder that wasting public money is not the same as blowing private millions. Many Canberrans forget this, so I’m unsurprised you find it amusing.

And meanwhile my point still stands…

It also still doesn’t have ABC3 programming.

Good comments, Al, but I’m still laughing at the idea that any one would watch ABC3.

You’re a bit late. The ABC hasn’t broadcast on channel 3 in Canberra since 1993, I think. The ABC now broadcasts on Channel 9. Of course when the analog signal gets switched off there will be no ABC on channel 3 or channel 9 at all.

A Noisy Noise Annoys an Oyster ,since you don’t have a digital box your going to be in trouble aren’t you or did I miss sarcasm

I agree and am glad few of us can see the downside of the paper. They did massive promo for the new change until I got the paper and I was like huh .. what change??

Also, where is the originality? Copying one of the Sydney paper’s LIFE is aint going to take them anywhere!

Overall they are not consistent, start something and with time the quality drops! Sadly, they are only money drivennnnnnnnnnn!!!!

How quaint, you still read newspapers!

As paperboy indicates: Newspapers are dinosaurs, but journalists are monkeys (This is a good thing for the journos).

My advice: Keep the “news”, ditch the “paper”.

With a few exceptions, the digital TV expansion has done little more than put reams of crap on air. I’m amazed – even a little angry – that taxpayers’ money is buying the reject TV that ABC3 broadcasts.

The only worthwhile change was the transfer of the editorial and letters back into the main body of the paper rather than being quaranteened in that silly tabloid Forum section. Would have liked to see the headline font change from that faux Times Bold to the bolder font used by The Courier Mail before it went tabloid. The new tabloid sports section is very good but I don’t think they’ll be able to keep up the quality, especially with the Friday Footy supplement the previous day.

I agree with the comment above about the half page wraparounds – they add no value and a lot of aggravation.

My kids don’t even look at the other channels anymore. I can’t stand a bar of those two ‘hosts’ ABC3 has, but if they are escaping the advertising onslaught of the commercial stations’ kids programs, then I’ll go with it.

I agree, Really Panorama was a copy and paste job on the Telegraphs Sunday magazine insert.

Even to the extent that the copy the news ltd habit of referring to the PM’s wife as our “first lady”, a bit odd given the PM isn’t our head of state

+1 to Gunghalin Al on moving to tabloid format – they’ve done it for Sunday Times

Also what’s with the ‘page and a half’ for some of the section’s front page wraparounds? An absolute pain in the arse for reading!

As a daily subscriber, I thought that some of the changes helped lift the look a bit. And it is to be expected that the paper should continue to improve its design. As a full-colour print run these days, it also makes sense to make more use of spot colour in banners and elsewhere.

The sports section is now entirely sport (rather than having the public notices hidden away at the back of it) and in ‘tabloid’ sizing. Good move.

In fact, I’d like to see more (preferably all) of it go to the tabloid size. To think that one has to take into account the size of the local newspaper when selecting the dimensions of a new dining table is quite absurd. The broadsheet format is a shocker to try to read – across the breakfast table, in bed or in public transport. And that’s with very good eyes… (Cue howls of outrage from people who think that tabloid size must equal tabloid content…)

One major flaw though is the font they’ve used for the Monday TV Guide. I think it is Calibri but it is too big and the tracking is very loose. It makes it very hard to read. Change it back please CT. It also still doesn’t have ABC3 programming.

You’ll be out of a job then won’t you paperboy?

They copied the formatting of the SMH/Age and pasted it into the CT. It did improve it slightly by rejoining some of the sections that should be together.

Panorama looked like a lifestyle lift-out in a Sunday paper.
