When In Rome is the 3rd play written by Duncan Ley that we have produced together. In 2001 THE BURNING was our first collaboration and this play went on to win “Best Play” & “Best Original Work” at the CAT Awards that year. This year THE BURNING was published by Playscripts Inc. in New York and several scripts have already been sold. On top of this a production will be opening in Sydney on June 18, 2005. We produced his play “In Cold Light “ in 2003 winning “Best Original Work” at the CAT Awards that year. Now “In Cold Light” is under contract to be made into a movie with production due to commence early in 2006.

And now “When In Rome”, the play many believe is his best piece of writing yet, opens with some of the finest actors in Canberra, including: Ian Croker, Richard Anderson, John Honey, Gordon Nicholson, Duncan Driver, Louise Bennet & Samantha Sangston.

When In Rome concerns those at the head of the Roman Empire in its period of greatest power and decadence, yet reaches through time to comment on the ideologically-divided political and social arenas of the present. The new Emperor, the infamous Caligula, has resumed his position after a bout of illness that left the state of Rome and the sanity of its Emperor in question. Where the loyalties of the Senate, the Army and the Imperial Family lie become points of the deepest and most riveting intrigue.

When In Rome is sure to be one of the theatrical events of the 2005 Canberra season: tragic, thrilling and often very funny, it offers audiences all those ingredients that make for great theatre. Moreover, it asks some very pertinent questions that will leave its viewers thinking deeply: as one character asks, ‘Do you think that in a thousand years time, all this will have changed?‘.

When in Rome will be performed at Theatre 3, Ellery Crescent, Acton – known to you as the home of Canberra Repertory, from June 23 to July 9, Wednesday to Saturday at 8pm, with two Saturday matinees at 2pm.
