When the wind blows - The Great Macarthur Pong

We have been living in Macarthur for over 12 months which as everyone knows is just over the hill from the Mugga Lane tip.

Since the big wet we have noticed an interesting third world type of odour in the suburb whenever the north easterly blows.

Sometimes the smell is quite unbearable and often goes throughout our entire house.

Last night while parking at Erindale shops I noticed the smell there, so it appears not to be isolated to just Macarthur.

Has anyone else in Tuggeranong noticed the smell? Is there anything that can be done about it? Why hasn’t anyone kicked up a stink (pardon the pun) about it as I’ve heard nothing about it from any other sources?

Don’t a couple of liberal politicians live in Macarthur?

😀

Yes, maybe it is the rotting corpse of Zed’s political future that is disturbing them?

At least Zed will still have a job after this year’s elections – Corbell won’t, and I am still wondering why.

Yes! I am with you on that one, we live in Fadden and I get this stench going through our house every day. We have lived here for about four years and it’s been a problem for about six months, I have emailed a couple of government departments and was ignored [of course]. All the people I know who live in Fadden all have the same problem, it is coming from the methane plant over the hill, but why it’s so bad now we need some answers from these morons who run the stink hole. I am all for a methane plant but not in our back yard’s.

I think you are onto something.
In an article about the methane gas-fired power generator at the Mugga Lane landfill in the Canberra Times on 22 September 2008 is was reported that plant operator Martin Janota said residents in surrounding suburbs might be unaware of its existence but would not miss the smell if the methane gas wasn’t burnt. “The houses over the hill, they’d be whingeing for miles,” he said.
Well, some of the methane is being burnt but we are certainly still whingeing.
It was also reported that TAMS said numerous old landfill sites across the ACT were not required by the EPA to be monitored for methane gas levels. “None were near houses and if a housing development was proposed it would be referred to the agency”.
Before the suburbs of Fadden Hills and Macarthur were developed there would have been old cells at the then existing Mugga Lane Landfill so I am wondering what the EPA said about the DAs for the aforementioned suburbs if indeed the DAs were referred to them.
I am thinking these DA’s may have pre-dated ACT self-government.
We all remember the Cranbourne housing estate planning debacle in Victoria, don’t we?

Contact Nicole Lawder with all the details :LAWDER@parliament.act.gov.au

would be better writing to the Chief Minister and every current Labor/Greens MLA + wannabees. + the Libs too of course.

Nicole will follow up on the the other MLAs on this issue.
She has also logging all complaints referred to her on an interactive map, something the EPA should have been doing years ago.

You’re not alone – we’ve got it in Isaacs. I’ve heard the tip is closing at some point, though ….

No – it was approved a while ago to about triple in size over the coming decade or so (I think that was the timeframe) – so its going to be there for a lot longer yet.

Its also now the only tip in Canberra I think. As I recall, the other one in Belco has been closed I think.

Now, where are the Tuggeranong Labor MLAs in all this smell mess ………..????

Triple in size?
No, that was our rates.
That’s where the Labor MLAs are on this issue.

Haven’t the Tuggeranong Arts Centre and the public pool in Tuggeranong had big funding boosts in the last year or two? I’ll look into it.

+ the CIT is opening up in Tuggeranong – not sure when though.

Expect more such announcements re “investments” in Tuggeranong from this ACT Labor/Greens Gov’t in the run up to this years ACT election. too.

I find it really patronising that Tuggers gets a sh$tty CIT (only a satellite, I believe, and it was already easy to get to Woden so no discernible advantage). It would be far better for Tuggers if they moved UC here (I travelled to UC part time for years and the travel really wore me down).
It’s like they have ‘decided’ that Tuggers people are all tradies and bogans when they should be more equitable with infrastructure. Now, I am not putting down tradies (my son is one, actually) but everyone knows universities are an engine for the local economy.

Do you mean the $2 million in 2012 to re-furbish the Tuggies Arts centre that pales against the funding for Andrew Barr’s nearby Ainslie Music Hub, Gorman House Arts Hub, Street Theatre Upgrade in 2013.

The $500k for the Tuggerong Lakeside pool also pales against the $18 million for Andrews nearby Lyneham Sports Precint and $1 million dollar beach volleyball sand pit.

And for those who love to mention the $10.7 Million for a new Tuggeranong CIT. What do they expect that tiny amount of money will get you in a new Higher Education Campus? As a comparison, in the same Budget Labor gave $18.4 million just to modernise Belconnen High School. My guess is the new Tuggernong CIT will be a few class rooms in some old building near the Hyperdome. It will teach a few locals some general CIT courses. The bigger issue is this is actually a net cost saving to Mr Barr by closing the Woden CIT and moving a little bit of it to Tuggeranong and the bigger Nursing classes to Bruce and the popular Business/IT based classes to Reid Tafe.

It makes sense to build up facilities at the centre where they are already being used, can be accessed by all, and have established communities. Ainslie High School has an excellent music curriculum. Gorman House is a worthwhile heritage building with associated users, as is the Street Theatre near the ANU.

Throwing money at Tuggeranong residents who seem, going on many of the respondents here, pretty contemptuous of the whole idea of Arts, thinking and government facilities would be playing right into the hands of everything the “undemocratically elected” Labor/Greens does is “waste”.

Not quite; it was meant to only be dumped to x height in y area, where x wouldn’t have had any significant impact over the ridge, have a number of years ago had an expansion to the dimensions approved (I think it was billed to be related to the gas reclamation power stations). Combination of present height and weather would be the reason for the increased smell. It should diminish again after the south facing ridge is finished over the years and settles.

but on the same side, those 1920s didn’t expect 747s!

Where can I get a copy of those height and area regulations, please?

So there’s a smell that seems to follow YOU around, but has been mentioned by anyone else in the Tuggeranong region…

What planet have you been living on? This issue has been the subject of many threads on the RiotACT and recently has been front page in the Canberra Times.

Suck it up princess. You want cheap real estate just over the crest from a land fill and then also want to complain about the stench? Move, or start pretending you live in Venice (similar smell but with better architecture and gondolas).

The official response from the ACT Government is that no odours are being emitted from the Mugga Lane Land Fill.

Yes, in about 30 years. We will all be dead by then.

Don’t worry Tuggeranong residents your Local Government is looking after you.

Each of the last few years the “Budget in Your Region” web page has proudly boasted that the most money for Tuggeranong has gone to:

“Alexander Maconochie Centre” & “Mugga Lane – Land Fill Extension”.

Gee thanks Mr Barr – we really appreciate that you have spent our Tuggeranong tax payer dollars on the Tip and the Prison, next time we might like some of the fun things like a Sports Center, Arts Center, Urban renewal and improved shopping area like you have put near where you live in Dickson.

Gosh, but people who live at Macarthur are whingers.

I hear that building gas-fuelled power-stations don’t just create jobs, attract business and help fund infrastructure, they also eliminate odours when built next-door to tips.

Bummer about last year’s whinge-athon, eh, Macarthur residents?

+1

Lots of hot air in Macarthur

Rather than whinging about a comment/question like most posters….

I have lived in Fadden for 5+ years and yes, we thought our sewerage was blocked given the recent smell. Never had anything like it before. Yes, it appears it comes from the tip, which seems to be catching up for about 10 years of basically no smell.

I don’t recall any gas reclamation plants mentioned in the plans of that data centre. Only where the new large natural gas lines to run the power plants would go…

I sympathise, Toadstool. A few weeks ago, I was driving from Narrabundah to home the scenic way via Mugga Lane, with my windows open as it was such a gorgeous day after the rain.

But we shut our windows quick smart on turning left into to Long Gully Road. Phew! A disgusting smell alright. Smelt like a sewage spill (not the normal ‘tip smell’). I put it down an overflow into the creek after all the rain.

If you are still suffering, I would ring ACTEW and check if there are any pipes or outlets in that area. I would hate for that smell to linger in my home.

Muahahaha – thought I’d get this in before anyone else did.
