Hello guys,

I love iced black coffee but I cannot seem to get one at regular coffee shops.

I know Starbucks has it but there is none in Canberra.

I ordered an espresso shot over a glass of ice cubes once but it did not come out right because the barista did not know what she was doing…

I’ve not been to Lava recently, but in general their coffee was quite good.

However ONA in fyshwick (and I think Manuka) do whats known as a cold drip coffee. Its made by dripping iced water through the coffee for about 12 hours, and then served on ice. Its really good stuff. I never used to drink black coffee until I started frequenting their cafe….

They also sell cold drip sets to make your own (not cheap though).

Harvest on alinga st do black iced coffees and cold drip.

Thanks guys for great tips and suggestions! It looks like there are many options here! I am from oversea and I probably did not know how to order it properly.

I’m not a coffee drinker, but I live in Weston and everyone is obsessed with Lava. Apparently they’re very good.

While not an Iced Black Coffee, Lava in Weston (mentioned above) does a sparkling black coffee. The guys there have explained to me it’s cold sparkling water with the espresso shot floated on top, so you get the hit of cold with the hot coffee. Haven’t been brave enough to try it yet (at risk of loosing my non-existent street cred, I’m a flat white drinker) they assure me it is delicious.

Don’t do it, it’s not the best tasting thing I’ve had, they use natural mineral water, which I think has a weird taste at the best of times.

ONA in Fyshwick “Cold Pour”

Stunning Coffee

Two before ten is good as is Harvest right around the corner who also do cold drip. Have to add that never tried the cold drip stuff, but that their coffees are nice – better than most cafes. Harvest would have the slight edge over Two before Ten for me. I’m not a big coffee drinker so I am quite picky about where I get mine.

Two Before Ten do a cold drip black coffee, which they serve over ice. It is really good.

The following is posted on the Qantas epiQure website. I’m yet to try it out but it sounds tempting:

“Lava Espresso Bar [Ph: 02 6257 8882]. Lava is only a small coffee shop located in Weston creek Canberra however we work with some of the big names in the industry, namely ‘Sensory Lab’ in Melbourne. We brew a variety of ‘Select Estate Coffees’ at the store. All of our coffees are fresh roasted and seasonally selected based purely on taste. We brew these amazing coffees through espresso, pourover, syphon and cold brew. Cold brew is starting to become really popular in Canberra especially now the weather is warming up.

We use a ‘Yama 8 cup cold brewer’ to brew our cold brew. This process takes about 8 hours to brew, with ice cold water dripping at about 40 drips per minute over freshly ground coffee. The resulting brew is true to the individual characteristics of the beans produced by the farmers, processors and roasters.

We offer many different coffees throughout the year as the seasons change and different coffees are coming into Australia. Some real highlight coffees we have had recently are: ‘Honduras cup of excellence #3?, a coffee that is full of juicy sweetness with a strong blueberry tone. And ‘Don Pachi Geisha’, geisha is rare varietal of coffee that is in extremely short supply and is so full of extraordinary flavours. This particular coffee displayed tones of caramel, strawberries and cream. This exclusive coffee cost us, wholesale price, $250/kg.

We serve our cold brew as pure as intended, in a frozen glass. We don’t dilute the brew with ice or water to keep the flavour as rich and sweet as possible.”

Have you tried Canberra Connect?

During summer in Italy you can get caffe freddo which is made up of espresso shots with sugar added and then frozen (usually in a soft-drink bottle). I’ve never seen this in Australia – if it’s available in Canberra that’d be awesome.

I’ve found that any maccas will do it, just ask for a long black iced coffee… Gus’ does it and so does Lonsdale Roasters, all of them with the same request…
