Where do you want the Erindale bus station to go?

Chief Minister Stanhope is asking for community help in finding a location for a bus station in Erindale:

“The ACT Government has identified Erindale as a key location for a major bus station to improve sustainable transport options for people travelling to and from Tuggeranong,” Mr Stanhope said.

“This bus station will include new bus services such as the Blue Rapid service and sustainable transport options such as the co-location of bike>park>ride facilities.”

Erindale is currently serviced by four bus routes, three of which run through the Comrie Street bus stops in the Erindale town centre and a fourth which stops on Sternberg Crescent.

The ACT Government is seeking community feedback on two possible sites for the proposed Erindale bus station, both on McBryde Crescent.

One possible location is opposite the shopping centre and would involve closing the eastern end of Ricardo Street. The second is on a site west of the first option which would involve reconfiguring access to the shopping centre car park.

Your thoughts dear reader?

Could someone explain how putting out a press release at 7:46:13 pm about a session that started at 7:30 pm promotes community consultation?

The media release was put on the Chief Minister’s website at 4.14pm 12 April.

The consultation sessions were advertised over the last few weeks. A notice was placed in The Canberra Times Community Noticeboard on Saturday, 2 and Saturday, 9 April and there was an advert in last week’s Chronicle and there is information on the website for the Department of Territory and Municipal Services (www.tams.act.gov.au ).

As I local community member I do not agree with either option for an Erindale Bus shelter. Even if I lived in another state or country I would not agree.

The problem is not the buses, it is the growth and design on the centre and the suburb itself and the parking arrangements which are currently not sustainable.

It would be inexcusable to look at the bus system and shelter without looking at a full redesign of the Erindale complex which included carparks and bus shelters. I see through this plan as a build one lane and fix it later, which will see the complex and surrounds being developed and changed for years. The people can not have major works that take years to complete. It will do the local shops no good, business will have to pay to redesign and it will see local owners broke, frustrated with the government and the lack of forsight.

As a community member I am tired of the ACT government working in silos and completing major projects over several years. The Stand-in-hope Government has not grasped the reality of any situation that involved major projects.

This needs to be part of a complete plan and not a “quick” win, only to spend millions of taxpayers dollars at a later date to rectify the ACT Government’s ineffencies. Its like build one lane, then come back and completely redesign, build another lane but on the left side and make the right side move into the middle and hey can I have fries with that!

When is Stanhope and his “government” going to look beyond a quick win to a suitable and sustainable plan. Stop relying on friends and change they way you do business. You are in government and can CHANGE policies which may give you a faster time to market and better project plan realisation! Fix the project management system not the invidiual jobs. Its quite embarassing to be a Canberrian.

You could learn a lot from the Commonwealth and other states if you bother to take of the rose coloured glasses. Being part of Government is not to make your friends happy and provide them with jobs. You need to focus on serving the people and positioning yourself long term.

agreed – not going to comment until community gets a say – albeit late

They have obviously never driven on McBryde Crescent in the evening. It is a poorly designed mess of roads that easily clogs under any load due to the number of right hand turns needed to get into or out of Erindale. Why would you even consider injecting more buses into that chaos.

If you are going to build a major bus station why wouldn’t you build it off a major road, like say Erindale Drive or Ashley Drive. There is even an under utilised block of land on the intersection of those two major roads.

Better still, build it between Wheeler Crescent and Amsinck Street – plenty of room with easy access.

Hell yeah lets put it on ricardo!! Its already a mess over that side with people going to Vikings, Maccas and the restaurant strip on gartside.

What’s wrong with putting a few more sheltered areas on comrie street instead? Close to the shops for the oldies and youngies that need to catch buses, and its mostly just traffic getting into and out of the shops.

Probably still won’t be able to get a bus to my part of Monash from Erindale.

Erindale as a whole is a complete shambles traffic plan wise. Trying to move around on a Friday/Saturday night and find a park is usually a ‘fun’ game when every flocks to Tuggeranongs fast-food “mecca”.
