Steve the gnome is missing – have you seen him? Photo: Supplied.

Where is Steve? The call has gone out for whoever took the ugly but endearing gnome from a Dickson home yesterday to please bring him back.

It is difficult to decide whether Steve is actually a gnome or a gargoyle but what is clear is that he is quite an identity in the neighbourhood – sporting Christmas hats and daffodils at different times of the year.

He is also very heavy and his owner Kate List says that moving him from the front step of his Majura Road home would have been a big job.

“Steve is made of concrete and is quite heavy. It would take two people to move him and they will probably have done themselves an injury in the process,” Kate told The RiotACT.

Kate is surprised that anyone managed to take the gnome away without being discovered.

She is hoping that it was just someone being silly and that they will put Steve back.

“He’s very noticeable. I don’t think someone else could put him on their front step without someone noticing.”

Kate describes Steve as an “ugly cranky version of a gnome” but adds that he has “a load of personality”.

“He is quite a fetching character that guards our house.”

Kate bought Steve from a garden centre in Taree in 2014 and says he weighed the boot down when she brought him home.

He has sat on the front step of the family home ever since – at least up until yesterday. Now there is an empty space where he once sat and he is sadly missed.

If you know Steve’s whereabouts or have any information which may lead to him being reunited with his family please contact Kate at katelist@bigpond.com.

Alternatively, if you were responsible for taking Steve please just put him back where he belongs and everything will be fine – no questions asked.

That is one ugly gnome. Poor Steve, maybe another gnome saw through his skin deep ugliness to his beautiful innerself and they have run away together to make other ugly little gnomes and live happily every after …
