Im told there is an underground music scene in canberra, but I’m yet to find it.

Does anyone have suggestions of where i can get some musical sustenance?

Anything jazz, blues, folk, world, or just a little bit off beat….

I’m also interested in places to play informal gigs

Try the Folkus room (serbian club Mawson) http://www.thefolkus.org.au/Folkus_program1.html

In the past, they’ve had monthly sat arvo performances with walkup acts and usually finishing with a big jam (looks like that’s not on the schedule yet for this year, but hopefully it will be!)

The Folkus Room is moving from Mawson to the Italo Australian Club at Forrest. It’s right in the thick of NSW festival season at the moment so nothing doing until Friday 30 January when David Hyams and his Miles to Go trio are on. (US Blues legend Del Rey is on the same night over at the Merry Muse, so time enough to explore cloning technology).

Also, The Beez (http://www.thebeez.de/ plus MySpace) will be at the Folkus on Friday 13 Feb, and a couple of other Canberra venues that week. Good fun band, with a mix of song parody meets Berlin cabaret. They’ll be at Corinbank and the National too.

Try looking here:

HearWhere is a search engine helping you find live music playing all over the world. With more than one million shows from over one million artists. HearWhere not only shows you who is playing nearby, but also plays the artists music, and links to the artists myspace page.

Canberra Muso’s club is a great resource, and the Backanalia is always good fun too, with tons of jamming afterwards. The Front has good performances, and you can just rock up and play outside if you feel like it.

The Pot Belly in Belconnen has a wide variety of music. Last night there was a bloke playing the slide guitar. On Thursdays it’s open mike night so anything can happen.

Generally you just need your ear to the ground.

Canberra Blues Society’s Monthly Blues Jams third Sunday of the month at the Statesman in Curtin. 1:00-4:30pm. $2 entry.

If you feel inspired, take your instrument along and jam with them.

Pretty much the Phoenix is your best bet on Mondays/Wednesdays/Saturdays. Won’t be much on until Feb though.

Super Best Friends and Melbourne’s Barons of Tang at Phoenix Bar tonight. It’s in the bus interchange, will fill up quick, try get there at 8 at the latest!

There’s usually blues on at the Old Canberra Inn on Friday nights, and the Merry Muse at the Polish Club opposite O’Connor shops does folk.

Listen in to Insatiable Banalities

Check out the Phoenix in Civic, and join the Canberra Musician’s Club.

Get in quick and there’s a Backanalia on tonight.

The Front at Lyneham shops, just down from Tilleys.
