OK hive mind, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to begin making our own bread products and are looking for a Canberra supplier of unbleached/wholemeal spelt flour in 5 or 10 kilo bags.

Feel free to post any slow-process bread recipe’s you might know too.

Spelt flour is not gluten free, so I would advice Coeliacs not to use it.

Don’t know about where to get spelt in bulk but here is a website you might like

http://sourdough.com/

Throw out the freeze dried yeast and get into real sourdough. You’ll never look back!

ah, ok…

so I googled “spelt flour” and apparently you’re not talking about spelled flour as opposed to flower.

God, I hate inglish… Even as a first (only) language.

damn you troll-sniffer. damn you to hell (that was my line…) 🙂

I’ve bought it recently from the Nut Shop at the Fyshwick markets.

Personally I avoid spelt as I’m a celiac so I don’t pay much attention for it.

No wheat problem’s here so I’ve not paid particular attention but I’m pretty sure spelt is much better for celiac’s

No good for making’s the type’s of bread’s you buy’s at a bakery perhap’s but spelt is reportedly much better for you, though it fell out of favour with producer’s as modern wheat product’s made for higher yield’s or easier processing or something.

Sorry troll, I wasn’t sure where I should put the apostrophe’s so I’ve put them everywhere and you can sort it out for me.

As Nature Intended in Belconnen Market. Any grain you like in enormous sacks.

Well, I spelt it flower. But the shop said that was no good for making bread so I’m no wiser.

Except for the fact that bread recipes does not need the redundant apostrophe, ie it’s not recipe’s.

I’m pretty sure I’ve bought spelt flour in big bags for breadmaking at Mountain Creek Wholefoods in Griffith, and at the nut shop at Fyshwick Markets. Although I prefer to buy $24.90 10kg sacks of continental breadmaking flour from Chifley IGA. Cheapest in Canberra, and makes a very nice Italian or French style loaf. Have phoned Weston Mills (wholesaler) and they only sell by the pallet-load. I’m willing to bet ANU Food Co-op has lots of bulk flours to choose from too.

You could ask around at the EPIC Farmer’s Market: I’m pretty sure there are people there who bake bread with spelt (they might be able to put you onto a wholesaler). Personally I avoid spelt as I’m a celiac so I don’t pay much attention for it.

try the nut shop and the organic grocer, both at Fyshwick markets. I know both shops sell bags of flour by the 5kg, but not sure if that includes spelt flour.

Mountain Creek Wholefoods in Griffith might – also found this post – slightly dated info.

You could probably try the Food Co-op at the ANU. They have all sorts of dry food in bulk, you just need to take your own bags.
