Where to find a cheap used tricycle?

I am looking for a cheap used tricycle.

I am bulding the young uns a billy cart and need the rear axle and gear/cog assembally.

The rest could be broken, no issue. I have checked a few bike shops but they essentially only have new tricycles.

Where would be a good place to look for a cheap one? It does not need to be pretty, all I need is the rear axle and mounting assembly.

Even then I’ll probably widen it so it does not need to be perfect.

Thanks.

Hi
You could try asking on Freecycle Canberra http://groups.freecycle.org/freecyclecanberra/description

I’ve picked up a few things I’ve needed and got rid of a few things there too that would otherwise have either gone to landfill or sat around taking up space and collecting dust

Why not just get a kit from ebay? They bolt directly onto just about any bike and they are chain driven. Plus, you can get wide ones, skinny ones, fat ones, old ones! If you can find a trike cheaper than that….buy it.

Most bike riders who have one realise that it isnt something that you get rid of so quickly as they are hard to get and look good in the shed next to the bag of hens teeth.

Actually I’ve got one in my backyard you could have for free. (needs work)

Most tricycles have the pedals directly on the front wheel, apart from the more expensive adult versions. They generally aren’t a throwaway item like a regular cheap bike, as the owners care for them a bit better and use them for a reason.
Might be better off looking for a busted Chinese motorised quad bike. Failing that, mix and match some steel rod, bearings and a sprocket

I got a good radio flyer trike for $8 at the Sunday markets in the Woden car park.

Maybe try Trash and Treasure

Try the Green Shed at the tip.

The recycling depot at the Mugga Lane tip would be a good start. You may even find a billy cart that just needs some re-loving.

If you’re on facebook, suggest you drop Jayson a line at https://www.facebook.com/HeyThatsMyYouthWorker – he runs the MCSS Choppers group for Melba Copland Secondary School and might have some leads.

Good luck.
Chain drive tricycles are very rare these days, even though they are probably the best introductory wheels.
Everyone thinks that their little darling is a) a genius and b) ready to ride a bike at the age of two.
So everyone buys bikes with trainer wheels. Which are then ridden like tricycles…
I suspect that you will have to weld a sprocket onto a surrogate axle.
