Hi everyone,

I am wanting to play tennis and only seem to be able to find competitions that are super-serious. Given that I’m a beginner and am going to kind of suck, is there anywhere I can play that caters to beginners? I can travel to anywhere in Canberra to play.

Thanks in advance, hive mind!

You can play tennis at Active Tennis Coaching in Braddon and Ainslie! They are a great club and have small tennis lesson sizes with only 6 players per coach making it awesome for beginners to start and improve their tennis skills. ? http://www.activetenniscoaching.com.au

Tennis Canberra has beginner adult lessons at Old Parliament House Tennis Club, Barton Tennis Club, Reid Tennis Club and Turner Tennis Club. Plus have social dinners after the evening sessions so players can have a feed after their session. Junior session are after school and weekends plus social tennis events are regularly played throughout the year. Visit http://www.tenniscanberra.com.au for more information.

Tennis Canberra has 3 venues (Barton, Dickson & Reid) which offer adult tennis lessons. There are beginner adult sessions and Cardio Tennis: Monday-Thursday and Saturday mornings delivered by Tennis Australia Coaches. Linked is more information http://healthyidentity.com.au/tennis/

Hope this helps 🙂

MPower Dome in Gowrie. mpowerdome.com.au
Lessons and court hire. Indoor and out. Other sports also available.

About 15 years ago, the Kambah tennis club ran an evening adults program. Two hours on a weekday evening, where the first hour was coaching, before everyone would break off into groups to play some games (doubles mainly). The games were never too serious, there was a range of skill levels, but nobody was an expert, and it was just a lot of fun to combine that coaching, then practice in a proper game.

I’d love to know whether this concept still exists anywhere – sounds perfect for the OP, and I’d be interested too.

Hi AllaAurora, Barton Tennis Club and Majura Tennis Club in Dickson provide a range of coaching programs for all ages and playing ability. The Tennis Australia program Cardio Tennis is a great program for first-timers and MLC Tennis Hot Shots is perfect for juniors. There are social tennis groups and inter-club comps. For more info see http://www.healthyidentity.com.au/tennis

Hi AllaAurora (& Gentoopenguin), if you are looking for a fun, social workout from tennis I would recommend a new program called Cardio Tennis. There is an open day this weekend, so you can try it out for free. Check out the following link for more information http://www.tennis.com.au/act/news/2012/09/06/free-cardio-tennis-open-day-15-september
For information about beginners programs at venues throughout the ACT, it would be best to email Tennis ACT on ACTReception@tennis.com.au and our community tennis officers will help locate a suitable program for you.
I hope that helps.

Hi AllaAurora, I am a lousy player too and have encountered the same problem. I don’t know how to serve (and don’t really want to learn it) and rather hit a couple of balls across the net without counting points. I ended up grabbing a friend every so often to play and we use the courts next to the Gungahlin library. There are two of them and they are free (first come – first served basis). Cheers …
