White canvas shoes rather in at the moment?

The other night we were having a drink in Dickson while waiting for our take-away order.

While enjoying the atmosphere in Sub-urban we couldn’t help but be struck by the prevalence of white canvas shoes. Is this a uniform or something?

Also admire the way the bar stools make it look like g-strings are being worn!

I thought they wore them to have something white to match their wanna-be white sunnies! 😉

It’s a nice bar, cool art-deco decor matching the exterior, good selection of beers on tap, nice crowd…

what’s not to like?

I went there recently for a night out with the lads, and the place was full of desperate old women. All right!!!!!!

I probably struck out because I wasn’t wearing those gay white sand shoes.

Blimey, who’d have guessed?

OK…so $20+ for Rabens…musta spent a fortune over the past year recycling my canvas (artist here…so used my Rabens as canvas 🙂

Just found a cheaper and better (imo) raben style shoe… called Deks. Check em out… http://www.zeaglegroup.com Now I can recycle every other week with the savings…bimonthly new art for the win

there not just volleys! there called rabens or billies, that are sold in Parliament (the name of the shop obviously)! the most comfortable cute shoes ever. there the new thongs

As usual, it isn’t actually all about you.

No, it isn’t. The comment was intended as a joke. I do try and go out of my way to support and encourage other people quite a bit.

I’ve worn those kinds of shoes (well not white ones, but the cheap canvas variety) for years. I’ve also suffered minor lower back pain for ages and psiatic nerve problems, I never thought the two were connected until the cheap pairs became trendy and expensive and I bought a proper pair of trainers for equal or lesser value. They are far from fashionable but they certainly fixed the problem.

Funny thing is I can remember being refused admission to an establishment far less civilised than this not so many years ago for wearing similar footwear (canvas shoes with no socks).

I’ve been to ABN in Volleys, but not for some time.

No, I’ve never been to Sub-urban and I wouldn’t know it from a bar of soap. It’s only All Bar Nun that I may have ruined.

Same nobs who ruined All Bar Nun!

And the price of Dunlop Vollys too 🙂

the tiled pillars make it look like the inside of a men’s room. the hard surfaces everywhere (tiles, wood, weird glowing bar) makes it an incredibly loud space. and it’s full of people who would otherwise be in o’neills, except they think going to sub-urban makes them sophisticated. oh and then there’s the unexplained redundant hyphen in the name. that makes at least four things not to like.

I’m still surprised that no one greeted the topic with “slow news day?”.

Far as I can tell white has been around a while, and probably used for just as long as a colour of shoe…

I remember having dunlop beachcombers when I was a yoof.

Dunlop Volleys have been my shoe of choice for a while (also coming from an *not to be moderated* ‘outdoor’ background). Although I never clean them, so the white becomes a grey/white in about a month or two.

However, to be like the pictured Metro-Warriors, you’ll need to buy the $100 versions to truly fit in. Also cleaning them every 2 hours is a must to maintain the white chic.

Aw, JB, is a li’l digression like that really a hijacking? I think it makes it read like a conversation … I’d rather you moderated both sides of the rather exercised exchange about a friggin’ typo!

I’m more interested in the fact that you were apparently *enjoying* the atmosphere in Sub-Urban. What’s to enjoy? Or is this too off topic, and will I be moderated for even daring to ask?

PS Fantastic call on the g-string seats, Johnboy.

I have tow pairs of slip on Volleys. One pair has a guy smashing a guitar and the other pair is a series of white and black skulls. As for laced sneakers, Converse All Stars are the way to go.

This is a thread about cavemen in white shoes, not caving in white shoes. Serious business either way 😉
For the record, I like a tangy dunlop check, no laces for rapid sneakability.

What happened to those wonderful white canvas shoes (like Volleys but with no contrast trim) that you used to be able to buy for a tenner a pair in army disposal stores? Has anyone seen anything like those recently? They made the perfect retro sandshoes.

I want a pair of those steel-capped Volleys. I don’t know why… I just find that particular combination so silly I must have them!

Nah mate, safety-capped KT-26’s ah the shiz. They even come with a bright yellow tag that’s laced into the first row of eyelets to advertise that you are a safe cheap bastard.

I always prefer the blue stripe myself.

My dad always had them with the green and gold stripe. I had forgotten about Dunlop Volleys till now ….

Haven’t actually seen them in a shop here, but they’re on http://www.volleys.com.au and I’ve seen them being worn by someone.

I have heard they also come in cammo now – anyone seen them locally?

It’s just a pity that this is pushing up the price of Volleys: I paid almost $30 for my last pair of the buggers.

so not the birth hole, then?

Wait, is that the one up near Blue Water Holes? My one sperlunkerous day was spent rebirthing through that clammy orifice.

JB, notice in the shot that the white shoes are for the (definitely) under 30s – along with the short(ish) shorts.

where did you go caving?

Wee Jasper; Signature, Dogleg and Enigma, plus a nice picnic and swim at the river.

so not the birth hole, then? oh, wait, it is underwater at the moment.

Glad I could help.

In future, if you’re going to nitpick at another’s typo might I suggest that you don’t make one yourself. 🙂

Thanks nys

realityskin, it’s called a typo. I’ll remember to have a good night’s sleep tonight so I can post like I normally do. Just for you, ok?

I love my slip on Volleys!

They’re popular, and with good reason.

Lightweight, cheap -about 20 bucks- and you can slip them and still get into pubs.

That said, every bastard has them now.

Ahhh, after many years, I am finally on the cutting edge of fashion in my Dunlop Volleys. Shame I went caving last week and they are no longer white…

where did you go caving?

I’ve had students (male) wear hot pink canvas shoes (sandshoes) to school. Some have also wore checkered ones, fluoro lime green ones and fluoro orange ones.

White stains to easily 🙂

I will have to wait until they are at vinnies. by then, the trend will probably be over.

Nothing says Summer in the City like the sockless, white slip-on. Tres chic!

I’ll confess to owning a pair or so of the black Dunny Volley. There is no good white shoe, IMO.
