ACT Policing has seized a second vehicle within a 24 hour period after an organised burn-out event last night (Wednesday, December 5).

Around 10.35pm police attended Brindabella Road, Coree in response to an anonymous report of burn-out activity.

Police observed a white Holden Commodore engaging in burn-outs, causing circular tyre tracks on the road, excessive smoke and a strong odour of burning rubber.

Police activated their emergency lights and sirens, causing the driver to stop. His vehicle was seized by police and taken to the ACT Exhibit Management Centre.

The driver will be summonsed to face court at a later date.

Traffic Operations Superintendent Kylie Flower said police in line with its Ministerial Direction will continue to focus on road safety issues, particularly in relation to anti-social and dangerous driving behaviours such as burnouts, speeding, street racing and other irresponsible driving behaviours.

“Our primary responsibility is the safety of everyone in Canberra. If people choose to break the law then they should be prepared to wear the consequences,” Superintendent Flower said.

Under section 5 of the Road Transport (Safety and Traffic Management) Act 1999, police may seize vehicles for offences of street racing, speed trials, burnouts and menacing driving. Vehicles can be seized for up to 90 days for a first offence and may be seized and forfeited to the Territory for a second offence if ordered by the Courts.

So it’s the middle of the week in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere…..
Seriously who gives a sh#t ?

So when a hapless motorist from Tumut comes across the scene, beeps his horn to get by and his life turns into a scene from Deliverance (minus the banjos) it’s all OK?

WTF are you smoking ?, they were doing burnouts in the middle of the bush, that hardly makes them rapists.
Also as somebody that has travelled that road at night many times I can tell you your a lot more likely to hit skippy or fatso the wombat than somebody doing a burnout

WTF are YOU smoking?
People live out here. Uriarra Village is expanding all the time. Many families use that road now. WHy should they have to contend with doughnut making muppets who think Brindabella Rd is their own personal skid pan.
And no, it doesn’t make them rapists. But it does make them idiots who shouldn’t be on the road.
And no, its not out in the middle of the bush. Its on a public, sealed road.
The whole area around Gate 4 for the Cotter Construction looks like a skid pan at the Nats. When it rains that area gets terribly slippery because the whole road becomes a wet, rubbery sheet.
Between these burnout dickheads and the weekend Casey Stoner wannabes, I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t a fatality out here one day.

I’ve got a few friends that live out in Uriarra, and they used to advise me to only use the Cotter Road/Brindabella route during the day because it was full of morons racing and doing burnouts during the night. Not sure if the particular part of Brindabella Road they were on is part of the route to Uriarra but there are definitely people using that road at night for these morons to run into. A car or several cars stopped in the middle of a dark 80km/ph road doing burnouts doesn’t sound all that harmless to me.

First line: “… seized a second vehicle within a 24 hour period after an organised burn-out event last night (Wednesday, December 5).”

Then the next line: “police attended Brindabella Road, Coree in response to an anonymous report of burn-out activity”.

Last night, someone “organised” a “burnout event”. This means more then one person, with more then one vehicle arrived at a prearranged place and did a prearranged burnout.

The police received an anonymous tip that this event was taking place. They arrived and caught the offender.

There is no conflict in what the police have said in regards to this.

It ties in with the rest of what I said (which is not quoted). It is less about the conflict and more about the whole piece flowing better if the first five paragraphs (sentences) were combined to one paragraph. Joining the first five paragraphs (sentences) to form one single paragraph would look better and read better. The choppy way it reads at the moment leaves a feeling of awkwardness around the series of events that led to the confiscation. And as a Ford fan, I am still happy to see any Commodore taken off the road, even if only for a short while.

I get the impression that five dot points were dropped into a ‘Dear John’ pro-forma (the last three paragraphs). The two writing styles are very different.

Is there a form that one has to submit to the AFP if one is organising a “burn-out event”? Where do I obtain said form?

Might write a deranged letter to Shane seeking some clarification and assistance.

All while there are hundreds of unsolved ACTUAL crimes, the AFP are driving out to Coree to catch kids doing burnouts. I guess there’s revenue in traffic offenses and not in catching people who commit real crimes though…

Yep – police stop totally stop trying to arrest people until they’ve consulted some knuckledragging revhead bogans to check their opinion on whether it constitutes an ‘ACTUAL crime’ TM.

Well, being neither a revhead or a bogan, I still see no value in police wasting their time catching kids doing burnouts on a deserted country road. I’d prefer they focused their attention on all the assaults, robberies, rapes, muggings and drug dealing that goes on. Stopping that is of value to the community. Stopping people doing burnouts in the middle of nowhere is not. It also hampers natural selection.

I can understand them being busted if the police saw them doing this in a suburban street or somewhere that they are likely to injure other people, but driving all the way out to Coree in some sort of burnout sting operation is laughable at best, and a waste of time and resources.

Someone tipped off the cops, so someone was obviously quite unhappy about it.

Not sure why you think it’s ridiculous for the cops to respond to reports of incidents happening outside of the city – the same laws apply, don’t they?

That road is dark and infested with wild animals, you’re probably more likely to crash doing the 80km/h speed limit then you are doing a 2km/h burnout

Please make up your mind, ACT Pol. Was the car seized as a result of some amazing intelligence gathering exercise relating to organisation of a burn-out event, or because an anonymous report of burn-out activity?quote]

I don’t get your point.

The media release is stating the event was organised. This usually means that two or more people got in touch with each other and said ‘let’s do this at this spot at this time’. It then states that someone, who declined to provide details of their identity, contacted them and let them know what was going on.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Oh, and to the people who think the offence was committed in the middle of nowhere, since someone called the police it obviously wasn’t ‘in the middle of nowhere’ but more likely on nowhere’s edge. Either that or one of the ‘in crowd’ dogged you.

Doing burnouts is an offence under Section 5B Burnouts and other prohibited conduct, of Division 2.1 Speeding and other dangerous driving offences, under the Road Transport (Safety and Traffic
Management) Act 1999. As such, it is both an “ACTUAL” crime and a “real” crime.

Do you mean that you wish the ACT Policing would focus on crimes that you either don’t partake in, or don’t condone? Wouldn’t it be joyous if we could use that as a reason…

Defendent: “Your Honour, I would like to submit that my arrest was unwarranted, as I don’t believe that losing control of a vehicle and causing the death of an observer is an actual, real crime.”
Judge: “Oh, well, that changes everything. Case dismissed.”

If they crash, everyone has a cry of why the police didn’t do anything to stop it. They also annoy the local farmers, cause risk of crashing themselves, or starting a fire. It also makes it a pretty uninviting place for people trying to drive through.

Single dumbest criticism of Police that people fall back on. Whatever thing they dont care about they assume the Police shouldnt either. Its not like every copper in Canberra is tied up with this. What crime did you have in mind that a couple of uniforms would have made all the difference to?

I think there may be a new person writing these releases. This one consists of eight paragraphs. Five of those paragraphs are single sentences (and one is a clause). Same with the last couple of ACT Policing media releases. They have definitely improved, but still got some ways to go yet.

If its on a sealed public road then it’s not in the middle of no where. Anyone could be using that road 24 hours a day.

Ffs it was in the middle of no where

I love it when muppets think they’re beyond Australian law…while they’re still in Australia.

Suffer, d*ckhead.

“an organised burn-out event”? So I assume there was a large gathering of people? Why does the article make it sound like he was out there on his Pat Malone?

Crush it

The western intersection of Chuculba and Canopus in Giralang shows evidence of some heavy duty circle work by a jerk. This wasn’t done in the middle of nowhere. There are houses and footpaths in all directions. A cockup on the part of the moron who did this could’ve resulted in a pedestrian being killed, or an out of control vehicle ramming into someone’s house.

So to hell with all of these fools, and good on the cops for busting them and impounding their vehicle.

Now, why don’t they impound the vehicles of drunk drivers?

the title of this thread makes it sound like the commodore has been crashed, not just impounded due to burnouts. a tad misleading.

such a shame the road has been defaced with circular tyre tracks…..how will we cope!!???!!!

Wednesday night could only be “RushHour”.

A bunch of kids with nothing better to do.

Smoke and a burning rubber smell! Oh no! Lock up your children!

Oh wait, theres nobody out there anyway.
